View Full Version : Differences in encoded audio...

When I view the properties of AVI files I've created following the Gordian Knot tutorials Media Player tells me the following are in use -

AC3Filter
Default DirectSound Device
Morgan Stream Switcher

However when I view AVI files that were not encoded by me Media Player says these are in use -

Mpeg Layer-3 Decoder
Default DirectSound Device
Morgan Stream Switcher

------------------------

What is the difference in the encoding process for the other file? I assume I'm using AC3 audio and the others are use mp3 audio, but how do I use mp3 for my AVI's? The reason I ask is my AVI's have audio playback problems on some PC's while other AVI's (which have used the mp3 audio) seem to work with all PC's I've tried..

Thanks for any advice,
HR

You can encode the audio from ac3 to mp3 using BeSweet. There are many guides in Doom9.org to transcode audio between differents formats. This is the AC3->MP3 guide:

http://www.doom9.org/ac3tomp3.htm

I don't know exactly how to use GordianKnot, but I suppose you can choose the audio file(s) you want in the avi (maybe it also can do the conversion to mp3, I don't know).

Hi-

Yes, albertgasset is correct. You can convert the AC3 audio to MP3 within GKnot, at the time you set up the encoding. In the Encoder Tab->Add Job->Audio 1, select the AC3 File, tick whichever of the MP3 settings you want, and set the delay if there is one.

The probable reason that other computers can't play the AC3 audio with your movies is that they don't have the AC3 filter installed. You have it because it comes with GKnot. So, send them to the Doom9 Downloads Page->Filters(show all filters)->AC3 Filter:

http://www.doom9.org/software2.htm#filters

If you are following Doom9's guide step-by-step, you'll see his conversion of .ac3 to .mp3 is done in the R4R process.

Thanks for the replies, I'll let you know how things turn out next time I encode.

I didn't use r4r when I encoded I just went straight through Gordian Knot... I started configuring r4r last night but I still have to get used to it...
