I would like to purchase a DVD burner this week and would like to know generally which burner is a good one to get and which media seems to be good to use. If the media doesn't really matter I might just go on www.pricewatch.com and get a big spool of them. Also do the disk wear out easily? Do they last a long time? I'd like to put some family video's on some of them and also try making some movie backups. Is there anyway to backup a movie onto a disk and not loose quality?

You can´t expect much from disc for $0.55 per piece ;). Whatever works for you is the best for you. But if you want to make some family videos you should spend more money on quality media like Verbatim, Maxell, TDK or some other BRANDS.

In some test I have red half year ago they compared compatibility of DVD±R/W media with about 40 settop players. Most copatible format was DVD-R (97%) followed by DVD+R (87%). In my opinion it is due low compatibility DVD+R format with Panasonic and Pioneer players (yes - both of them are members of DVD forum, which set up DVD-R format ;)). I know players which plays only one of the format so there couldn´t be definite answer to your question.
Here (http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Articles/Specific.asp?ArticleHeadline=DVD%20Media%20Format%20Compatibility%20Tests) is the link to the test on CDR Info (http://www.cdrinfo.com/) server.

For best compatibility, go with -R/-RW media. My burner (an external TDK 440N which has been excellent!) can burn the -R/-RW and +R/+RW but neither of my standalone DVD players will accept the + media, they love the - media though.
