Why do we use XviD?

Nothing better than a weird question like this one to start an interesting thread :D --or not :rolleyes:
You might know that the Free Software movement (The GNU proyect (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html) ) started because a moral question (freedom of the final user)... but what have we now? A good development method? A good piece of software? Maybe somebody is still thinking in the user freedom, or maybe not... That´s been long discussed in the Free Software world (generally talking about the GNU/Linux systems motivations) but i´ve never heard a word of it here in doom9.
So what is in your hearts, XviD developers and users? Why do we use Xvid?

Several answers are allowed in the pool, but try to choose the one that you believe the most.

Also take notice that "Because it is Free Software" and "Because it is Open Source" are not the same answer. Free Software (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html) talks about a moral question, and Open Source (http://www.opensource.org/) only about a good development system (You can read more/better here (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-software-for-freedom.html))

Option 1-3, and option 5. I switched from Divx to Xvid early on, mainly because I hated the way Divx4 did the 2 pass method. I was impressed by the quality even then, and used Xvid exclusively for compressing my vidcaps. I haven't tested the newest beta yet, but from everything I've seen from the codec comparision and the threads, this version should leave every one else in the dust.

I think the fact that it's open source and free kicks ass, but the main reason is the quality, it gives me more quality for the space than any other codec I've used, it weened me away from SBC encoding over a year ago.

Its free.
Now its also very fast :D

No backdoors whatsoever like in M$ products :p

I for one use it because I like many others in my agegroup find the letter "X" intoxicatingly cool. And Divx has the X 4 letters in. Which makes it 4x less cool and bad ass then Xvid which has it as the first letter. Ok well im off to watch the movie XXX which maybe shallow, pointless and dull but it has 3 Xs and nothing else. So it makes up for its lack of a proper plot and meaningful dialog. *sigh* I just wish the XFL was still on...

And the only reason I wouldn't choose 4 would be my lack of programming knowledge. Other reasons come to mind too, like the fact that the team is actually concerned about MPEG-4 compliance. However the feature that ultimately made me switch from DivX was XviD's ability to preserve details at sane bitrates - I like making DVD backups that actually look like the DVD :).

I had some problems with dev-api-3, so I stayed with DivX. But with every new version I like DivX less (don't want to go into detail here).
Now we have dev-api-4 and I'm impressed. No more problems, highly configurable, highly detailed, hardly blocks and - it's FAST. On my 400 Mhz machine that makes a huge difference.

Although it's great to have such fine support for XviD here on doom9 I didn't vote nr.5 because for me that's an additional goodie after having chosen the codec. But it didn't affect the decision itself much.

I use xvid because it offers great quality at its speed, and it's constantly getting better....fast......
In addition, it doesn't make up new names to confuse user in the case of adaptive quantization........

I switched from SBC to XviD about 2 years ago and never regret.
Recently i bought a DivX standalone player that 'loves' XviD, even the first ones i did, although it claimed on the box not to play XviD at all!

That proves for me, i made the right decision 2 years ago!

When I was young (;)), I moved to XviD when I found it was way better than DivX 5, then I moved to something "not covered by" MPEG4 licences.

No, it's the older (<1 Month!) Tevion DVD 3000 with ESS "Vibratto" chip from the discounter ALDI for 79,99 T€uros. This bugger even plays DivX 3.11 at 768x432 with AC3 ;) Some people had problems with this one, but i for one can say i'm very pleased with it.

Why I use Xvid?

Simple....

Quality!

Less-concerning reasons for me:
-Open source doesn't necessarily mean well-developed (thinking of other open source projects that never go anywhere here) but in this case it is.
(Open source also means 'impossible to buy out and mess up by some big-time software company' which means it's likely to last.)
-High tweakability, meant for power users.... like me.

And of course:
-why not?

it simply is the codec that provides the flavor i expect, and this for constant time ..it survived several reconsiderations (unlike divx wich died after 4.12something).

Also i cannot deny it being handy to read on doom9 5 minutes after Koepi's release which switches bork and wich rock.

PS i think we should all send a 5 euro bill to our local representative of MPEG and tell them "here, take this you wanted it, i give it - but don't expect me to buy crappy commercial software"

Screw’em If i was to send money anywhere it would be to the developers of this great codec!!!
