A recent alcohol induced discussion:
Home made DVD HD unit:
Using (modified) DVD authoring software can we create an oversized image containing over 40, 50, 60 movie backups all selectable via menu's.
And surely someone can write, or modify, a DVD burning software which will write to an unformatted Hard Drive as if it were a DVD disk? Using such software this oversized image is then written to the unformatted Hard Drive (80GB, 120GB etc); large hard drives are very cheap now.
DVD players are also so cheap now, most cheap / chinese made models use standard PC type components so you could then exchange the existing DVD drive with the new Hard Drive.
As an addition to this theory could you use a standard IDE cable (Master and Slave) and put the Hard Drive as the Slave and the original DVD Drive as the Master, then when the unit is switched on without a DVD Disk inserted it will boot to the Hard Drive, if you insert a DVD disk into the DVD Drive it will boot to that.
Discuss ... ;) :) ;)
