View Full Version : DVD Playback issues

About 2 months ago I posted about the playback problems I was having; picture blocking and sound dropout upon standalone playback. Since that post I have notice quite a few other people are having similar problems, none of which have been solved.
I was hoping to start a thread where everybody who has experienced such problems can post their findings, media used, software used, burner, standalone units etc, so we can try to solve these problems.

I have owned a Pioneer DVR-105 for about 5 months and I have made about 60 backups. The first 25 - 30 backups were perfect regardless of which software I used or speed the disk was burnt at. But since then it is hit and miss whether my recent backups play fine or are full of glitches. Note: A friend, who has the same burner, and uses the same media type, plays backups for his children and he has a problem where he will play a disk one time and it will be fine, the next time he plays it, it is full of glitches.

Standalone Players: Pioneer 515, Pioneer 717, Yelo 800.
Media: Ritek G04, DataWrite Classic Gray 2X TDKG02, Verbatim 4X and TDK 4X.
Software: DVDDecrypter, DVDShrink, IMGTool, CCE, DVDMaestro.

Please do not post reply's like:
1) 'try different media', as stated above with these quality disks all my backups used to be perfect, and I have also tried alternative media for testing; Tako Yenden, Bulkpaq Orange etc, but the problem still persists.
2) 'try burning at slower speeds', I have tried all allowed writing speeds for the various disks, but the problem still persists..
3) 'try different firmware in your writer', I have tried all the available firmwares, I am now back to using the original firmware, but the problem still persists...

Please post only constructive reply's ;)

i was having the same problem. then purchased a new dvd player which stated that it supported dvd+r and the problem has stopped. all of my burns play flawlessly.

DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5
Image Tool Classic .90 Build 5
DVD Decrypter V. 3.1.6.0

Verbatim DataLife DVD+R
Memorex DVD+R

Sony DVPNS725P stand alone

I was pretty much convinced after toying with a few different players that its the stand alone. some times a disc would play fine, hit pause and it would play like crap the rest of the time. it was totally hit and miss. with the new player, not a single problem.

Its most likely the standalone unit fellas.

I have a nice Philips DVD Player, that was 350 dollars in its day (two years old), and there are some brands of dvd-r's that it will not play. There are some brands where it will skip, and the drive will spin up and "focus" for like 3 seconds.

I solved this problem by buying a 39 dollar Apex DVD player at walmart and plugging it into the inputs at the front of my Sony GA9ESG Amp.

Go figure that a 39 dollar dvd player works better.

@MattO

I know I wasn't "supposed" to post this... but I once had skipping or stuttering problems in my copies while using both Recode and DVD Shrink. Then I flashed my Sony Burner's firmware with that of a RICOH drive so that it would finalize my copies as DVD ROM. Haven't had a problem since. I haven't bought new set tops (in fact, my copies now play in stand alones which wouldn't before read DVD+R media, not to mention Playstation 2 and X Box). I will admit that I'm using the latest version of Recode much more than I am DVD Shrink, so perhaps there was a bug fixed in the latest Recode release -- but I highly doubt it, because DVD Shrink hasn't acted up on me since, either... and nothing has changed as far as that software's concerned.

In all serriousness: If you have access to Nero CD-DVD Speed, put one of your problem copies in your drive and run it. CD-DVD Speed will tell you what format your disk is in. If it's DVD ROM, then it's got to either be a program issue, or stand-alone related. (I know that's not what you wanted to hear... but you ruled out media already by testing different brands -- at least I can't throw that one at ya! ;) )

One way or the other, I wish you luck in finding your answer!
--Cheers!
