This is supposed to be a 4 speed burner. When the drive was new , with no firmware upgrade it did burn at 4 speed but when new firmware became available and installed,1.2d I believe, now it is a 2 speed burner. I don't know of any firmware eraser to take the drive back to where it was. My lesson learned is leave it alone if it works and not chase every upgrade there is.
I would appreciate any info from any firmware experts if anything can be done,

The 1.2D firmware has worked successfully for many people. This is the firmware that many users have flashed onto their Sony DRU500A. There is a very long thread on this subject over at rpc1.org (use the search function). Your problems are more likely due to media than upgrading the firmware.

Basically, your drive is an OEM copy of the Sony DRU500A (with a plainer front). Many, many people have had problems trying to burn DVD-R disks at 4x in the Sony DRU500A. However, 4X DVD+R blanks are available for around $1 each which work perfectly in the Sony DRU500A/Liteon.
