Hello, Richard Y, welcome to Doom9's forum!
The audio track is processed separately from the video. The video is encoded by itself, and only afterwords, is the soundtrack multiplexed with the video into the final .avi file. The _movie file is the video output from the video encoding step, and does not include a soundtrack.
Read through your <movie>_Gknot.log, and you'll see the steps that are taken.

What are the extension of your files?
if you provide name while encoding, one file would be movie.d2v, then movie.ac3/movie.dts. And finally the original movie file with name movie .avi. The intermediate file can be discarded by checking the corresponding option in GK. (dunno where because I'm currently not in home.)

cheers for the response guys but i think tuning nailed it, ok when selecting just doing a movie in gordian knot its doesnt give you the option to delete al intermidiate files created which i think this is, how ever ifyou select the credits option it does last few movies had credits i wanted to encode in a small bit rate so not sure why this options only there when you use the trim feature
yeah just done it now using the trim feautre set my credit start point and selected delete intermediate files im assuming now i wont get left over files
but why isnt that option availble when i dont use trim, should it be that would save disk space but then i guess they figure you can just delete them all and keep the one main file
