I have a question, hubby bought a DVD player a little while ago and I bought him some DVD's for Xmas. Out of all that worked, one called "Judge Dredd" with Sylvester Stallone refuses to work in the machine. It was taken to a friend's place who has a player and a recorder and it did not work on these two either, any ideas as this is a complete new world to me.

The DVD might be of different region than yours. So player refuses to play it.

According to the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com), that film is available for three DVD Regions: Region 1:U.S., Canada, U.S. Territories Region 2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Middle East (including Egypt Region 3: Southeast Asia and East Asia (including Hong Kong)You're in Australia, which is part of Region 4. So Tuning may be correct, you might have a disc which may not be playable in your player, if it is a Region 4 player.
For more on DVD Regions, see Question 1.10 of the Official DVD FAQ (http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html).
Another possibility is a faulty disc.

TEB:
Tuning has given you a good clue to follow.
From the DVD Regional Coding Map and other Information (http://www.laserrot.com/info/lrinfo/dvdmap.html) Web site:
"DVD discs contain Regional Codes which can be used to prevent the playback of certain discs depending upon the geographical area it is played in. The various studios and home video companies lobbied to make sure this coding system was a required part of the current DVD standards, because they wish to control how their DVD titles are exported to other countries." Neat site, check it out.
You can easily find out which region your Judge Dredd disc is coded for, if you have a DVD-ROM drive installed.
Download DVD Decrypter (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Rippers/SetupDVDDecrypter_3.1.9.0.exe) by clicking on this link.
Then, find the guide for this program, Decrypter will identify your title and region as soon as you load the disc. DVD Decrypter Guide (http://www.doom9.org/dvddec.htm)
This may be a good starter exercise for you, but the point is moot if you don't have a DVD-ROM. :)
jggimi-I see you've responded in the time it's taken me to put this together (more than five minutes, dontcha know?), but I'm gonna hit the "Submit" button anyway! Sloooow.... yes that's me. :)

when i got my dvd player (2 months ago), 1st thing i did was to check if it could play vcds, 2nd was to search the net on how to set the regional code to 0 so i could play any dvd besides 0 & 1, now to obtain an alternate region dvd to see if it works.

!@#$%^&* run outta swear words. Found a reply and forgot to log in, there's one born every minute!
I found why the above DVD did not work. The player itself has to be set for Widescreen! Normally the player picks up and sorts it but this time it didn't so we altered it and now can view it okay.
Thankyou for your help, I have recently discovered about our Zone 4 thing but now I know what country belongs to what number. Thanks heaps.
