Why got you interested in backing up DVD's in the first place?

I'm curious as to what initially got people interested in this scene. I can tell you what got me interested...

As a preface to my ranting, when I watch some of my favorite movies (for the hundreth time), I'll watch bits and pieces of it - maybe 20 minutes at a time. Pop it in, skip to my last viewed chapter, and watch.

So, I patiently waited for the remastered Animal House to come out, picked it up, and eagerly put the shiny silver disk into the DVD player. Up come previews, no problem - thats what the menu button on the remote is for. Except that Universal put a PUC option on the previews. <rant> So now, when I want to watch the next few chapters of my movie, I have to sit through 10 minutes of the same previews. Watching the Seabiscut preview over and over makes me want to puke. Thank you Universal for destroying part of the magic of DVD's - the ability to skip right to the middle of a movie...</rant>. In fact I was so pissed off, I tried to return the DVD (they wouldn't take it back), and I demanded a refund from Universal (no response).

So, after initially doing google searches on how to get a DVD player to ignore these PUCs (no luck), I stumbled onto this site and a whole new world was opened.

Just curious what got others interested...

Main for me the fact that it amazed me that it could be done at all! It started about 4 years ago for me with divx (which I now think is total useless crap) then about a year ago with SVCD which amazed me (I now think is total useless crap) and now on to DVD. I like to have the main movie only, no user proibitions no extra junk your forced to watch. I never really liked DVD's for that reason, director commentary, extra's ect. Many many people will disagree I'm sure of it, but I wish dvd's were just tthe movie and nothing else!

I wish DVD were also sold like VHS: cheaper with no extras. And then have a Collector's Edition with all the stuff they bring now.

I don't care for the extra stuff of many DVDs I own, but I do care for some of them.

Mh... why? I know how my old LPs look and sound by now (ok, those was my Punk/Metal time... and I never mastered to see them as a to be protected medium but thought of them as beeing something that will stay regardless of how much I use 'em)... then I've grown older and I've taken more care with my CDs... but even then sometimes you just drop one and next thing you hear when looking for it is the sound of the breaking thing because it just went streight under you shoes (thats how I lost my Queensryche Empire Max with the Scarbarough Fair Cover I loved so much)... and even if not destroyed in accident - 2 of my oldest cds by know are getting visible holes in their reflecting layer... sad thing to notice... Now with DVDs and a new media again the least thing I can do to protect them is my one backup and to view that whenever I feel the need to... With some old Movies I already bought on VHS i am willing to pay for on DVD again (even if I am able to capture from VHS)... But I want to minimize the need to pay twice or more often on the same thing...
