can't import mp3 audio file

Hi, I'm trying to create a karaoke vcd in time for tonights new year celebrations, but when I try to import the mp3 file as audio source it displays an error about file cannot be opened or is unsupported, although the walkthrough for this process clearly says to import the mp3 file with a screenshot, so I take it it can be done - what am I missing?
Any help is much appreciated :)

Are you trying to multiplex an mp3 or trying to convert and mp3 to mp2? If the former, mpg files can't contain mp3 I believe. Only mp2. If it's the latter, then try converting to wav first.
