Wishes for 2004

I'd like to see NVidia / ATI doing MPEG-4 hardware accelerators based on current open-source MPEG-4 implementations like XVID or libavcodec. It should be able to work without licensing issues (not like Sigma) like it worked for OpenGL.

I'm sure there is a market for this, and a 3D+MPEG4 bundle would rock :)

A nice 2004 for all of you!

i'd like to see my sons readings(type 1 diabetes) stay as good as now once he starts school full days(prep 1). but thats just me. :)

i'd also like to see some of these rip-off companies die a slow painful death. hmm again that may just be me. :D

actually i would like the trends of this year to continue. that is great improvements in software for all mpeg standards, hardware prices in general becoming much more affordable etc.

I wish that people would leave subjects that have been treated in a codec comparison FAQ (and that have been brought up after each comparison for as long as I can remember) alone because I'm not gonna change my mind no matter how drunk I might get tonight. In fact, each time it's brought up again it reduces my motivation to ever spend another month of my life doing a comparison. It's the same as with the free pies message, constant nagging reduces a developer's willingness to go on and that applies to webmasters, too.

i wish that we will see nice mp4 support on hardware players
and a virtualdubmod version that can be used to mux and edit mp4 files :D

and i wish that all the great opensource projects that are around will continue their success story and that their development may never stop :)

I hope Ogg Vorbis finds some success. It's a shame to see such a good quality and free codec be so ignored.

I hope for big drops in prices for DVD+/-drives and media, along with increased capacity.

I hope Doom9 doesn't let the critics discourage him. He knows he does excellent.

I hope FreeNet actually starts to work well.

I hope that the MPEG4 video codec makers figure out that Greene's Theorem applied to spacial domain transforms will allow a doubling of compression without any loss of quality.

I wish for a standalone hardware player which supports all features of MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile, can playback all files encoded in RealVideo/VP6/WMV, and supports the MKV/OGM/MP4 container formats.

I wish for a program which allows the user to easily create interactive menus in mp4 files. I also wish that a menu system be defined for the Matroska container.

I wish that Vorbis will have proper multi-channel support, and that it will be possible to put Vorbis audio into an AVI container.

I wish for a video codec which allows me to "backup" a 2.5 hour movie DVD on 1CD with minimal resizing and loss of quality.

A good, cheap and easy to use DiVX/XviD hardware player that plays all the various formats correctly and can be purchased easily in the UK!!!

It's a nightmare trying to buy anything like that over here unless you are willing to pay through the nose or try you luck on Ebay. :P

MPEG-4 acceleration on cards with Video-IN and support for interlaced modes would be great for those doing Live-cam or TV capture.

Do you want to compare the size of a DV stream vs MPEG-4 stream (even @q2)?

RV9 is great for anime, but MPEG-4 has the standalone/CD-recorder/view-on-other-PCs market. Of course that if we say DVD-recorder choice would go MPEG-2... :rolleyes:

The important thing is that there is market for this stuff, as good as for 3D games IMHO.
