Hello,

This is the first time I've experienced this issue and I have used the same (or similar) encoding methods for some time. I'm making a single disc DiVX with the 5.1.1 codec, 3 pass, first two with Qpel at standard speed, last with no Qpel at slowest, all with GMC and B frames. The audio is a 128kbps VBR mp3 and was encoded beforehand with BSweet, and I have it set to encode credits seperately. Here is the log:

12/30/2003 8:48:54 AM: Job " 1" started.

I'm sure this is probably something incredibly obvious that I've overlooked, however I can't for the life of me see it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Nate

I think I figured out what's wrong. But not how it got that way.

The first thing I saw was this:...
FPS: 29.97029.97 is NTSC video. Donnie Darko was shot on film. Initially, I assume that you (or R4R) did not use Force FILM. According to www.imdb.com, it was shot on 35mm in Panavision.

I also note that your frame count is 152344, which is 84 minutes at 29.97, and your chosen resolution has an aspect ratio of 4:3, while both imdb and www.amazon.com seem to only show a 2.35:1 / 113 minute version of the film. 10:57:40 AM: WARNING: Number of counted frames differs from settings!
10:57:40 AM: WARNING: Settings: 149017
10:57:40 AM: WARNING: Counted: 154002
10:57:40 AM: WARNING: Difference: 4985You sometimes get this error message when you select IVTC, then don't select the "IVTC in AVS -> correct frame count" box. But when that happens, the "counted" value is less, not more. You have more frames than expected. I think I know what happened, but your soundtrack confirmed it:8:48:54 AM: Audio 1, determined: 105470 kb
8:48:54 AM: Audio 1, calc: 79427 kb
8:48:54 AM: New Bitrate for Movie = 970 k(=1000)Bits/sYou are using a bitrate estimate in GKnot, even though your soundfile has a known size. You could use the "select" button in the Audio A box and select the .mp3 file for actual size. Using actual size instead of an estimate makes compressibility checks more accurate. But look at the difference between your estimated and your actual soundtrack size. They shouldn't be that far apart. For 84:43, 128kbps is around 78MB, but your actual soundtrack is 105MB, much closer to 113 minutes.

You have more frames in the .d2v project than shown in the Gknot window. But, how you got to that state is not shown in the log.

How was the .d2v project produced? R4R or manually?

If manually, was DVD Decrypter in IFO mode? If manually, was Force FILM on or off when saving the .d2v project?

And, did you adjust frame counts or frame rate in Gknot after opening the .d2v?

Edited to add the following additional comments that have nothing to do with the problem, but are still things to think about:

Your compressibility test shows that at your initial bitrate estimate is at around 49% of maximum, which is below quality guidelines. It gets worse than that, of course, because your soundtrack estimate is so far off from reality.

How (or why) did you get a 4:3 (1.33:1) aspect ratio from a 2.35:1 source? You'll find compressibility is better with widescreen DVD content, as there are less pixels per frame. In addition, you get the complete film, rather than a Pan&Scan version. See Aspect Ratios Explained (http://www.doom9.org/aspectratios.htm) for more info.

jggimi,

Thanks for the fresh pair of eyes, that helped. I think I have figured out what happened. On the previous encode Vdub had crashed, and there had been items queued after Donnie Darko. I proceeded to just load the .avs's in the encoder tab, however I think I confused some of the settings with one of the later items some how. Donnie Darko is actually 113 minutes or so, not 84, and like you pointed out is obviously FILM and 16x9. The comp check was for another film as well, I am not sure how I missed all of that in the log. I created it as a new project and it worked as usual. I appreciate you help though, even though this was an issue of stupid (and/or tired) operator error! :)
