View Full Version : Burn successful... but discs are coasters

30th December 2003, 23:50
Season's greetings to all and happy new year everyone!

I had never burn a DVD-R coaster to this day, but today I got 4 of them and have still to burn a good one. Used 4 different brands of blanks and while all burnt successfully (according to ImgTool/Nero) none of them plays or even is accessible on my PC (says No Disc Inserted) or Pioneer stand-alone (ejects the discs).

IS MY RECORDER DYING?! :sly:

Below is the log of the last burn for anyone who can help:

I have to repeat that, it's not that the discs do not play, it's they're not all recognised as UDF/DVD/whatever by PC or stand-alone.
Have burnt at least 50 DVD-Rs with the same programs and recorder and never had a coaster before. And I used 4 different blanks and... got 4 different coasters so I wouldn't blame the media. Gee, thanks Santa Claus!!

Season's greetings to all and happy new year everyone!

I have had trouble with nero before with dvd's before. I solved my problem by using dvd decrypter to burn my iso's.

have you tried checking the burn options in nero? particularly the write method and packet sizes. Sometimes I've noticed somehow an accidental change in option selection is the reason for a faulty burn.

also... i hope you're not "test burn only".... cuz thats just silly. but it makes your drive seem like its burning when its really doing nothing.

but if youre good on these... try using another burn program. decryptor works exceptionally well. I've found disc juggler to work equally as well.

Use the newest 6.3.0.2 version of Nero. This should fix your problem. If you read the changelog there is again a fixed DVD Video issue.

After all I think about stopping the development of ImgTool Burn because the Nero API produces with every new version other problems...

Maybe you think different? Let me know!

A happy new year for everyone!

sorry CouJo for bunping into discussion but i have a little problem with imgtool classic (Still the best for my need)

I use it in conjuntion with dvd decrypter for mastering, but when i insert a rewritable dvd dvddecrypetrt stop, prompting for erase.

Could be possible di implement an automatic "erase : yes" option (in imgtool) ?

Thanks again
and Happy new Year !

There are at least 20 brands of dvd-r media out, out of which 15 are bad. Saying 'I tried 4, so it can't be the media' is simply wrong.

I'll include this in the new version. DVD Decrypter supports this feature since version 3.1.8.0 but you should use 3.1.9.0 ... if I have the time you'll get the new version with "erase" support really soon.

I have the same Toshiba SD-R5002 drive that you are using. I have burnt about 75-100 dvd's on this drive on $.89 2x media using DVD Decrypter. All of my movies were flawless until this past month. The last series of 4 movies I have burnt using same software, hardware, and media, I started getting major macro block problems in my playback. Then the last two that I tried wouldn't even burn complete and halted on a packet writing error. Show here:

I have seen this error on a friend's computer who was burning the same as I was. Both he and I came to the conclusion that both of the lasers on our drives were failing. The Toshiba drive has a maximum write rate of 2x. I remember back to the early days of Cd-r's when media was lagging the drive speeds, and if you burnt at 8x on 8x media I typically experienced alot of pops, skips, and hisses in the playback. If I burnt a cd-r at 6x on 8x media, I didn't experience any problems. I think am experiencing a similar situation with 2x media on a 2x burn speed. The drive can burn at 2x but it hates doing that. My computer store that I purchased my computer from is currently replacing my drive with a Sony DRU510A model that is capable of 4x which I am going to use currently at 2x. Hopefully the laser will not deteriorate like it had on my Toshiba.

I've recieved some of the same exact errors while recording on my toshiba. Oddly enough, the problem was solved by dropping in a laser cleaner cd. Go figure.

@pickupman: If you buy such cheap media, then some of the discs could be flawed. 2x writing on 2x media works just as good as 4x on 4x media, or, if you use a corresponding writer, 8x writing on 4x media.

Those problems did BTW not really exist on CD-R media either. It was the same crap-media-issue, nothing else.

The problem did exist with CD-r's. I had these problems with Sony, TDK, and Maxwell media bought from major retail chains in the early days of CD-R. Hardly cheap media at the time. If you read through the forum, you'll find a lot of similar posts in regards to burning the same speed as the speed of media. I have never used generic cd-r's because there is really no huge cost difference. Obviously, everyone has different experiences, and have different levels of knowledge on these issues. By looking at your number of posts in this forum you are very active in this scene, and I respect what you have to say, however, I am not a newbie and have extensive knowledge of computers and the like.

pickupman23m
2nd January 2004, 14:45
Hopefully, that wasn't the sole root of my problem. The tech guy at the computer kept getting the same errors when testing the drive for a warranty. He was receiving the same error. I hope he thought to clean the eye. Getting a better drive out it, so I am happy. Your experience may have been a matter of luck or coincidence, because a friend of mine had similar problems on his sony vaio machine. He had cleaned his eye, which may it better for a few more burns. He had to send his burner in for repair, and has been fine since.

Were the discs you used really made by those manufacturers? Were they recommended to be used with your writers? What writers did you use? I mean, if you e.g. used Acer or Ricoh drives, then your experience is not representative, because those drives were baaaaaaaaad.

I personally used a Yamaha 8424 in those times. Yamaha recommended to use dark blue TDK and Verbatim CD-R, and they worked. However, when I tried to use others, like Sony, which were not recommended for the drive, then I had such problems...

Especially the Toshiba 5002 is known to be picky with bad media. It is a miracle that .89 discs in a cakebox worked at all. Did you read the manufacturer code? Ritek does not any longer produce constantly good quality, and Princo does not work anyway with that drive. Which of those 2 are your discs?

SupaCoopa

First of all, CouJo, I find ImgTool burn such a valuable tool and I think it would really be a shame to stop its development. It does a great job at burning compatible DVD-Video discs, without having to guess between numerous options, unlike Nero itself with all the different Video-UDF-ISO etc stuff. So, stick with it, I say!

Now to my problem, I've been using all kinds of blanks, expensive ones like TDK and cheap no-name made by Princo or whatever and never had any trouble. Toshiba only seems able to burn at 1x with any brand I have tried but never had any other problems until recently. I've run out of blanks now, I can still burn CD-Rs (date and audio) OK though. I cleared the lens after the first two coasters but that obviously didn't help, and I think the "read" lens is different than the "burn" lens anyway...

I will now have to try the latest Nero version and hope for the best or give an other burn application a shot. But I trully fear those were the last days of Toshiba burning DVDs...

A very happy new year everyone!

I had the same problem on two occasions a while back... When I posted a similar question as yours I got 3,000 people telling me to use this program and that program just like you did... But Nero and my discs always worked up until the day of my problem...

Guess what...? the first time my Pioneer Drive WAS bad... It just died... Acted like it was burning but started burning coasters...

Second time this occurred it was software... I had just installed InstantCopy only to find out it can wreck your Nero installation..

UNINSTALL NERO... REINSTALL NERO...

99 times out of 100 thats the issue... Other programs can knock it out of whack... Especially InstantCopy...

I just say be careful about eveyone telling you not to use NERO... I find Nero to be highly stable if you have a stable computer... Lot's of people with OLD Systems and SLOW/SMALL hard drives do need to burn image files to get a good burn... and DVD Decryptor is sweet for that...

If you have a 1.5GHz CPU or better with 10GB or more of free disc space and you keep your hard drive defragged... then there is NO REASON that NERO shouldn't work FABULOUS for you...

Bottomline is that everyone here wants to be helpful... but people have prferences too... and sometimes they try convincing you to do things like they do instead of really answering your question... which if I understand you correctly, it's "WHY DID MY BURNER JUST START BURNING COASTERS?"

BEST OF LUCK

Regards... Jeff
