Differences between new Matricies...

Hey all...

I had a quick question about XviD 1.0 beta 3's included alternative matricies. I am interested in using them, but haven't the time to do some real comparisons myself. I was wondering if anyone has worked with these new matricies and what they found with them? I have used MPEG and h263 in previous builds.

I tried out hvs - best on a 760some-odd kbit encode at 608x320 (DVD source) and it seemed to give a lot of noise and wierd "swimming" artificacts.

anyways... before I re-encode with H263 - if anyone had suggestions as to an alternative matrix more in-tune with my encode?

Better don't use custom quant matrices as long as you don't know what they are doing. MPEG and H263 matrices are fine usually, only some really experienced users with the time and the will to use the search on this forum should read up about and then use wisely different matrices.

Don't think custom quant matrices can do wonders. They can help you gain the other 0.001% improvement in certain scenarios, which some people sometimes seek.
If you didn't read up about the matrix in use or do not understand what the values entered in them mean/do, you most likely do more harm than good.

thanks kopei.. I was under the impression that changing the matrix would change the very nature of the codec. will stick to h263 and mpeg for now.

Actually, even if I know how matrices work and what they do, I can't conclude anything from them.
If I wanted to find out the effect I'd probably have to encode and see with my eyes... I'm not sure there is other way.

There is an exception - matrices with very small values are usually called "high bitrate" matrices becuase they let you use much higher bitrates and higher quality (at these bitrates of course).

well i figured a high bitrate matrix was for a high bitrate movie, but what is meant by high bitrate? over 1mbit? and of course you have to take resolution into count too... balls this is all so complicated
