In have a peculiar problem with the playabilty of my dvd back-ups.
The back-ups initially play, but sooner or later the picture freezes.

I've tried 'everything', no matter what I do the problem stays.

This is what I have and what I do:
- pentium 4, 2.6GHz Win XP Home edition
- pioneer 105 (tried several firmware: 1.30, 1.33, 1.33hacked)
- ripping: with dvd decrypter (up to 3.1.9)
- burning: with nero 5.5 or with dvd decrypter (ISO write)
- installed latest version of adaptec's aspi.sys
- tried PIO mode instead of DMA (as suggested in burner FAQ, pioneer problems)
- tried several brands of dvd-r's (Memorex, Imation, Mmore, emtec)

Relevant details:
- the problem does not occur when playing back on the pioneer 105 itself, but so when playing back on my pioneer 656a stand alone or the Sony 1612 dvd rom player
- when using ISO read and ISO write on a single layer dvd (Spy Kids) the chapter structure changes, that is the chapter does not begin where it is supposed to begin, as if the adressing went wrong
- when re-burning a -RW dvd Nero (quick format) often cannot completely clear the dvd (cannot begin burning because of data left). When formatting the "percentage done" jumps back at the end, as if the dvd is unexpectedly long.

I've got the strong impression that the pioneer 105 uses a wrong format. Other players initially can read the dvd but get more and more out of reading frame, ultimately freezing.

Does anyone know what could be the problem? Is it possible a burner uses a wrong format. If so, how to correct this. If not, what else could cause the problem.

The FAQ solution (use PIO mode) isn't working and the cause (bug in the firmware) is, in my opinion, unlikely since I used several firmware versions.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

It is strange. Even using wrong media shouldn´t result into chapter shift .

You should try some "good quality" media like verbatim, maxell, Taiyo yuden etc. You can also try another burning software like ImgTool or primo prassi DVD.
