thanks for this info provided by [toff] and remastered by mosu :)
Make chapterXtractor support matroska chapters xml file...
In the ChapterXtractor.ini file change that:
Preset 7=Matroska XML
Format 7=%sp%sp%sp%sp<ChapterAtom>\n%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp<ChapterTimeStart>%hh:%mm:%ss.%ms</ChapterTimeStart>\n%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp<ChapterDisplay>\n%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp<ChapterString>Chapter %c</ChapterString>\n%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp<ChapterLanguage>eng</ChapterLanguage>\n%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp%sp</ChapterDisplay>\n%sp%sp%sp%sp</ChapterAtom>\n
Header 7=<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>\n\n<Chapters>\n%sp%sp<EditionEntry>\n
Footer 7=%sp%sp</EditionEntry>\n</Chapters>\n

Huh,
that's a nice one. May I ask, what is the advantage over 'good old' OGM format?

I guess, you misunderstood me.
ChapterXtractor can output OGM style chapter file and mkvmerge can read it, so where's the need for XML? (Why complicated, if you can go with the simple solution?).

Does the OGM format allow nested chapters?

Does the OGM format allow nested chapters?Besides that I would consider it difficult to make ChapterXTractor correctly output nested chapters in XML (it would require a recursive definition), I have not yet seen any DVD using nested chapters...

Hm, I never saw that on a DVD. I wasn't doubting the capabilities of the Matroska container, just ChapterXtractor is a tool to get the chapters from the IFO, nothing more.

Is it me or is there some kind of DoS attack on this thread

Nope, tiki4's question was perfectly allright. There is no real 'need' to use any other chapter format than OGM format, as mkvmerge can read both for MKV muxing, and there are no nested chapters to be found in DVDs, AFAIK ....

Actually, if you merge multiple titles on a DVD into one file, you could use the title as master chapter, and add the chapters of each title as subchapters (like a DVD, containing episodes of something), but AFAIK ChapterXTractor will only read one title at a time :p

O.K., O.K.,
you guys convinced me. There is some use in it (I never doubted that). I think I won't need it, though, sorry.
Now let this topic rest in peace. (I never thought of nested chapters).

Hehe , I was talking about the nearly 15 thousand views with just 7 posts at the time . It seemed wierd ,to me, that this thread would have more views in few days , then the Matroska FAQ thats been around since 27th May 2003 07:06 , thus me asking about a DoS attack (Denial of Service).

My point was that since the OGM chapter format doesn't support the more advanced feature, and ChapterXtractor does support XML, which can have nested chapters, why not use the XML.
Its a matter of prepping for the future. If everyone moves to the XML format now, it will make moving to common usage of nested chapters easier in the future.
I have never seen nested chapters on DVD's, and I don't even know if it would support them. But we aren't trying to just do what DVD's do are we? ;)

it's like
chapter 1
- chapter 1.1
- chapter 1.2
chapter 2
chapter 3
...
where chapter 1.1 begins at the same time as chapter 1, and chapter 1.2. ends at the same time as chapter 1.

oki doki
so it can be useful for a tv serie or anime??
(each episode is a chapter and we can subdivide each episode in 3 parts-subchapter non? intro, main video and ending i think)
in this view it can be useful for me...if i put all the episodes in one file-video....but it's not the case so i wonder what i can do with nested chapters :-p
thx alexnoe & sigmarador
BTW : HAPPPY NEEWW YEEARR !!!! (ok i'm late... i have the right to drink no? ;-))

And my Profs at the university like the XML format :P (i hope they read this forum...):D..they say it's more "universal", and it's a standar bla bla...

I think there's a typo in your code, pixolex.:(
At the beginning of the third line, "header 7=" appears twice, so the second one will be written in the xml file, corrupting the result.

For lazy rippers try ChapterXtractor (http://perso.wanadoo.es/sethftp/chapterxtractor.zip) (with matroska xml format chapters)
Sorry my poor english.

Nad how do you actually add chapters manually without importing a ifo file? =/

Open a file like this one (http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~noe/Video-Zeug/AVIMux%20GUI/voyager-season-2-dvd-2.xml) in a text editor (like Notepad) and add a chapter...

Well, i was watching through Examples in MKVToolnix... and made this:
--------------------------
Preset 8=Matroska XML
Format 8= <ChapterAtom>\n <ChapterTimeStart>%hh:%mm:%ss.%ms</ChapterTimeStart>\n <ChapterDisplay>\n <ChapterString>Chapter %c</ChapterString>\n <ChapterLanguage>eng</ChapterLanguage>\n </ChapterDisplay>\n </ChapterAtom>\n
Header 8=<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>\n\n<!DOCTYPE Chapters SYSTEM "matroskachapters.dtd">\n\n<Chapters>\n <EditionEntry>\n
Footer 8= </EditionEntry>\n</Chapters>
--------------------------
I've noticed few Differences in Header... mine is good for Verifying in f.e. XMLSpy.
And I do know, that i'm a bit late,.. and this is just as a SHOWOff :)

the Matroska XML chapter format is needed to create ordered chapters.
