I just started to discover this new "world" of DVD backup because I got a DVD burner from Santa.
I read that IC8 can deliver the best quality, but with my burner there was bundled IC7, that doesn't allow to backup the main movie only.

So, I was thinking about this process:
- use DVD Shrink to select the streams I want to keep and save to HD at 100% (without recompression). This could be done without deep analisys, that is fast enough.
- use IC7 to compress with the best quality.
- burn.

Am I right?

Bye!

yes, your method is correct :)

you can use a few methods to rip movie only but I think DVDShrink will be your best option as you can remove credits also using reauthor if required saving precious space

DVDShrink will also strip the audio as you say, so it will save IC having to do it also which means quicker processing ;)

be careful of undersizing with IC7 as it suffers with 2.35:1 movies and will not use all of the 4.37Gb and probably waste up to 1Gb (my real old link explaining why HERE (http://www.deano.dsl.pipex.com/backup/sizing.htm))

I'll pass on best quality comment ;) but have you tried DVDShrink on deep analysis yet and compared results?

At the moment, I only used DVD Shrink with deep analysis and I am very satisfied with its quality (at least respect to 1 CD DivX). Then I read the IC8 guide here on Doom9 and I learnt about IC supposed best quality, so I wanted to try this program too.

Another question, is there a rule to understand if the movie is being too much recompressed ? For example, 70% is generally good?

Thank you very much.
