I just downloaded Koepi's latest binaries (26-12-2003) and although he has stated that it should be intended/ used for educational purposes I have noticed that there are some impressive inclusions/ modifications to it that I welcome. But a few things have been moved around/ changed or entirely omitted.

I cant seem to find anything on his site regarding changes, etc with regards to the interface and with due respect it is somewhat annoying given that you get use to one interface and another totally different with different working/ terminology comes in :p

Out of curiosity... does anyone know why the omission in the credits and the ability to encode these greyscale, etc. ? (from the last version I was dealing with that being: 24-06-2003).

Further more I noticed that when encoding you get a very interesting status window however what are the various graphical bars for ? what do these represent ?

Also what is the Weight bar for under 'Rate Control' frame & BVOP sensitivity ?

Thanks you for your kind attention.

A lot of things have changed. There are no credits stuff coz now you have Zones. They do about the same thing but much better ;)

The feedback window shows how the codec is compressing stuff - how much I / P / B Frames it is using and what quants and more I think.

Weight Control is another mechanism to control the codecs behaviour.

Just do a forum search for better explanations ;)

Zones ? is this something automated ? or manual that needs to be set - that I have failed to see ?

Another thing... what about the Alt Curve System ? that also has been omitted ? I was hoping someone like Koepi would give some enlightenment to the specifics as to why these have been scrapped.
[ to be honest Alt Curv never really made perfect sense to me - if you could not entirely specify regions/ points in the movie for their to be variations in the curve/ amount of data used in specific points - I didnt see much point ].

First, there's already a guide here: http://www.doom9.org/xvid-vdub-final.htm

Second, zones basically allow you to have greater control over the video encoding. They allow you to, for example, designate areas that you think require more bits. Or if you wanted to do credits encoding, you can designate areas that you think do not require so many bits.

The guide above will probably do a better job than I can of explaining how to use zones, so please visit that first.

*EDIT*
BTW, greyscale does appear within the zone options. The reason it's there is that it allows you to designate greyscale scenes. However, you do still have the power to greyscale the entire movie.
