my question pertains specifically to dvdxcopy and IC8. Not which is better blah blah blah but i want to know if many ppl have used DVDXCOPY as not many ppl have posted about it and does that therefore mean that XCOPY is a far better more stable program than IC8?? I wanted to buy IC8 but by the sounds of it not many ppl have had much luck and I'm not one for "tweaking" programs, I mean if it doesn't work when it comes out of the package what's the point! I know there is alot of posts about IC but I want to hear anything bad or good about XCOPY if there is anyone out there that uses it. I hope to purchase by the end of today so hopefully someone will be able to aide my decision...;)
thanx

I have IC 7 & I don't have DVDXcopy. However here's wha I know the differences are:
1. IC 7 (and I guess IC 8) won't remove copy protection. I use DVD Decrypter to rip from the DVD to disk and remove copy protectin. I then use IC 7 to shrink the DVD to under 4.3 gig. I then use DVD Decrypter to write the DVD. DVDxcopy removes the copy protection.
2. IC 7 doesn't have any option to write a 2 layer DVD to two DVD's. DVDxcopy has this option.
BTW, my IC 7 takes an hour or two to compress a two layer to under 4.3 gig.

I have DVD X Copy and IC/7&8. which are both collecting dust since I use DVD-Shrink 3-5 beta and recode2(which is shrink added to nero)for just about everything now days, they all work for me but X copy has a lack of options I dont like, I want more control over what I'm doing.
You should visit DVD-X-Copies website and read there forums cause alot of people have had problems with it. read about there problems and see for your self. I have been a lurker here for along time and have never posted only because i never had to since I read all the post at this site and others and found the answers I needed without having to post myself :)
Hey my 1st post :) I'm not going to say which is better LOL cause i know better! I hate the long times with IC7&8 and x copy works for me just fine I used it earlier but have just chosen to mainly use Shrink or recode2 these days.
I rip with dvd-decryptor and then use shrink or recode2 and burn with nero.

IC 8 first experience created a dvd that would not play in anything. Will not try again.

as Alurker mentioned, I would try DVDShrink before buying anything as it's free
the only thing it doesn't do is split the DVD but there free methods on how to do that also
check out ddloopings guides great flash guides HERE (http://www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php) :)

I also use dvdshrink and recode2 for most of my backups, but when compression is set to under 80 percent I have no choice since usualy IC 7 and 8 have better quality than dvdshrink lineage of programs.

Exactly. As soon as movie needs to be compressed to less than 75% of its size, IC7/8 is far superior to Shrink/Recode. Movies compressed to 65% with IC7/8 usually still look great, while Shrink/Recode create major blocking.

It's funny that I see mostly talk of DVDShrink on these forums. IC7/8 is still the quality champ, despite its shortcomings.

Extremely debatable opinion, but due to rule 12, I won't get into it.
And once you consider IC's shortcomings, it becomes even more debatable. ;)

Silly rule, isn't it?
Quality, especially in the digital domain, is quite objective, not subjective.

Rule 12 says "Do not ask 'what's best'". However it doesn't forbid to state one's opinion about a backup solution IMHO.
It must be - and in my interpretation of the rules it is - allowed to say that one transcoder produces better quality than another.

absolutely correct :D, I don't know what all the fuss about rule #12 was about in the first place
I think everyone has their own compression levels after doing a few backups as to which tool they will use :). Along with the content requirements of course ;)

Rule 12 is well intentioned....
Asking is not the problem - It's the answering that seems to create chaos, or at least that is my observation from lurking in this forum.

that's because there is no answer, as all replies are based on opinion not fact ;)
the answer will never be fact, but some people cannot make up their own minds. People who are really fussy and want the 'best' will do their own tests and make up their own minds. If they think X is better than Y then even if Albert Einstein was still alive and mathematically proved with his formula's that Y is better than X, they wouldn't very rarely if ever, change their minds ;)
so there is no answer to what's best :(, only opinions and as long as they are sensible and not the usual 'rocks'/'sucks' crap, I don't have any issues
everything 'rocks' & 'sucks' in one way or another :D

Opinions are like as**oles. Everybody has one, and nobody cares about anyone elses. Some of the differences in these decoders are as obvious as a turd in a punchbowl -- but it still brings an argument...
Rule 12 is good.
