Why is my 2.40:1 film being encoded in 1.85:1?
I'm uysing TMPGEnc btw. shouldn't DVD2SVCD fix this?

DVD2SVCD is very clever at detecting movie aspect ratios and setting propper output aspect. To fully answer your question, we need some more information. Please read this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63406) and give us more info to help you better.

i'll have to reencode it as I deleted all the files. :D
i'll report back with settings and logs and stuff tomorrow.
edit: just read the faq, doesn't help me.
look here - http://misc.f2t.org.uk/preview.jpg
as you may know, pulp fiction was shot in 2.35:1.
so why is it being stretched by DVD2SVCD? How do I fix this?

Never believe what the preview pane shows for aspect ratio.
It uses square pixels and so the image is invariably distorted.
For example an NTSC SVCD has resolution of 480 x 480.
So if you put an NTSC DVD in the drive, set SVCD as your output and hit Preview, you get a square picture!
In real life this picture has to be stretched horizontally to fit a TV screen. Hence the fact that it looks stretched vertically in the preview pane is immaterial. So if the preview image was worrying you, don't let it. It doesn't mean the output file will look wrong.
However, once we have logs and so on and can see your settings we'll be better placed to help.

Unless you're using FACAR and a NTSC source. ;)
It has a mode for correcting preview AR.

Sorry, I don't have any PAL sources at hand to do the testing and support correct aspect preview in PAL. :(
