Is there anyway of checking which settings were used to encode an XviD file?
I know that you can check B-frames using ffdshow, but is there a way of seeing if GMC or Qpel were used?

If you use newest unofficial ffdshow build, it will also tell you if qpel was used.
Any ffdshow also tells about gmc, in the same OSD thingy.
It is also possible to discover quantization type (and matrix in case of mpeg), but you'd probably have to hack xvid's decoder to tell you that.

i remember i could see q-pel & gmc but it doesn't seem to work with ffdshow alpha 2003.05.23 (at least the q-pel)

It is not newest unofficial build sysKin was talking about. Look here (http://athos.leffe.dnsalias.com/).
