S-vhs Vcr

Dear all,

I have been capturing video from old VHS tapes to a PC using a composite connection, and have a lot of noise (despite having a MSI tv@nywhere master card with a comb filter). So, I'm thinking of buying a PAL VCR with a S-Video output - which as I understand it in practice means S-VHS VCR - and I could really use some advice.


1. Generally on a model which will provide good picture quality. (I have searched for opinions, but almost everything I read is years old.) The Panasonic NVSV120EBS looks reasonable ...

2. What does 'Digital Noise Reduction' actually mean? Is it just some filter which I could as easily apply in software, or something which could only be done by the hardware?

3. I'm a bit concerned about 'Jet Rewinding' my 10-year-old tapes - should I be?

A lot of s-vhs VCR's digitize the signal before processing it. By digitizing you can do things like adaptive 2D or even 3D (latest JVC digipure VCR's) and TBC. The digital noise filter is as far as I understand it not really different from the post processing you do yourself.

Personally I prefer to have as little as possible done by the VCR, since I cannot control or correct it. In my JVC you can switch it off.

As to which is the best right now, I don't know. mine is an older model.
