connecting dvd burner

I am sure a new classification called "You Want What!...hahahah" would be appropiate. I have absolutely no idea where to place anything at the present time so I won't till I do have some idea.
Most of the headings are all 747 material, way over my head.
I am about to embark on a DVD burning career when the burner comes off of layby, but I have been verbally told how to connect it, here is where I fall on the floor in fits of laughter (and at my age, that is a joke in itself), because I would not have a damn clue what this person is on about!!!!!

As far as installing the burner, you will have to "slave" it to the CDrom drive, or Vice Versa, this entails moving a "jumper" on the back of it, one device has to be the master, and the other the slave, so you may have to check you cd rom also, there are usually 3 jumper settings, Cable select (usually the default), Master, and slave.
Once the jumper settings are set correctly, it should use the IDE cable from the cd rom drive, there should be a second connector on it, slap it in there nice and snug, then follow it to the other end on the motherboard and make shure that ya didn't pull it loose. UNQUOTE.

Just breath and relax. It is all very easy you just have to believe that all is, is 3 wires to connect (power, data ide cable and sound cable if you want that) then moving a little black "jumper" which is a small black piece of plastic with a wire connector on the inside from 2 metal posts to another 2 metal posts on the backside of the DVD drive.
If you look at the top of the drive it will more than likely have a small diagram about the jumper settings on the back of the drive and right above the 3 places you can put the jumper are some letters MA= master(first or only drive on cable), SL= slave (second drive on cable) and lastly CS= cable select (not the best choice to let the cable select which is master or slave)

And making sure that your other drive is set for the other setting of either MA or SL on that same IDE cable.

I know it sounds complex but trust me it is not. I am a computer guru now maneuvering anywhere on them and just over 5 years ago I owned a construction company!!

1) What do you have on your primary ide cable (hdd probably)?

2) What do you have on your secondary ide cable (CD-ROM probably)?

3) Can you find those master/slave jumpers on the CD-ROM? What does it say: master or slave?

4) Can you find those master/slave jumpers on the dvd burner? If your CD-ROM is set on master, put your burner on slave (and vice-versa). Note your master device must come _first_ on your ide cable (attached in the middle of the cable).

Hi Wilbert,
To be honest I do not have much of a clue, as firstly the DVD burner does not come off of layby for a little while yet. I dare say you are correct though where these cables are at present. I have a CD rom and CD burner and when I got the courage up to install a modem card as the original was faulty, I saw what appeared to be a white flat ribbon like cable laying on top of the CD unit which in my case is the CD Rom. I am assuming this is for a DVD burner as I already have the CD burner. I have copied your info to notepad as I will not remember when the time comes to do the darstardly deed. But rest assured, I will be hollering as it gets closer to picking up the Burner. To say I am not scared sheetless would be a lie, I am fearful of stuffing something up in a major way!

But really it isn't difficult to do.

I started off with a copy of windows for dummies 5 years ago and I built my last 3 machines myself. The main thing about upgrading PC hardware yourself is bottle(because most cable plugs etc are a really tight fit and your pulling or pushing and thinking this is not gonna go and if i do it any harder I'm gonna break it, oh my god, i think i'll just pay someone to do it). Most things can only plug in one place so are quite idiot proof, i found the only thing thats really stressful is fitting heatsinks and fans to non socket 478 processors, cos i've seen a guy who works in a computer shop, shove a screwdriver through the motherboard.

once you've changed a few pieces of hardware you'll look back at this and laugh and wonder what the hell you were stressing about.
