View Full Version : Using HD-BURN with DVD2SVCD

My problem is really quite simple I think. I want to test compatibility of HD-BURN CD-Rs in my DVD player, but I have a problem converting a DVD to this format. I went into DVD, set my encoder as CCE, imager as Sonic Scenarist 2.7, output type as DVD, etc. The bitrate tab is where I believe my problem is arising. In SVCD output mode, the bitrate is automatically calculated depending on the size you set the CD to. In DVD output mode, however, changing the CD size does not change the bitrate size. I am not familiar with the method of calculating bitrate manually, and I've been looking for it for about 2 hours with no success. If someone can please tell me how to calculate the bitrate, I would very much appreciate it. Or if someone knows of a site off the top of their head that explains it, please send me the site.

I am trying to copy a 02:17:55 movie onto a 1400MB HD-BURN CD. I wish Doom9 had guides for HD-BURNing :(. Thanks ahead of time.

Try selecting SVCD output (use VCDXbuild), DVD frame size, media size 1400. I have not tried this, but conceptually it should work.

VCDXBuild supports CD sizes up to 449850 sectors (a little bit less than 1000 MB). With higher CD sizes, it exits with a "TOO BIG" error.

I don't know if there is other authoring SW supporting these big CDs, but sure VCDImager, VCDEasy and TSVC don't, all of them are based on the same authoring exes.

If Nero is able to burn your HD-BURN-CD, may be it will be also able to author it. DVD2SVCD will generate a 1400 MB mpg file.

Possibly, but the problem is getting a video file that will be over 800 MB in the first place. Even if Nero will reauthor a file, I still have to find an original file that isn't too big or too small. Love testing modern technology :). Thanks for the input.

Hi Richmix,

but the problem is getting a video file that will be over 800 MB in the first place.
May be you do not understand r6d2: in bitrate tab, don't select a choice, just write into the CD size box "1400". DVD2SVCD will take this as the required value.

BTW, I've done a test with Nero, and, yes, it is able to author a "big" SVCD: I've done a SVCD of 1600 MB (using Image recorder). The image has been mounted without any problem by daemon tools and the SVCD has been played OK by PowerDVD.

I never thought of trying to create a "normal" VCD image in Nero. HD-BURN only accepts .vob, .ifo, and .bup (DVD) files. I'll play around with making "big" SVCDs and reencoding to an image in Nero.

HD-BURN only accepts .vob, .ifo, and .bup (DVD) files.
I believed HD-BURN was only a way to double the capacity of the CDs. Nothing related with type of data supported. BTW, D2S is also able to create DVDs.
I'm curious, how do you burn your HD-BURN CDs? Are you using Nero or other SW?

I'm using Nero. I am not worried about the support HD-BURN offers for the (S)VCD format. I'm sure that will work fine. I am curious, however, as to whether or not HD-BURNed (S)VCDs will be compatible with my new DVD player. I've had quite a few people tell me most standalones can read them, but on the other hand I've had quite a few tell me the exact opposite.

When selecting the option to burn an HD-BURN video disc in Nero, Nero unfortunately assumes it is going to be in DVD format. I suppose if worst comes to worst I can just nab a few mpeg2s off of some old VCDs I have and give that a whirl. The problem with making images using DVD2SVCD is that Nero recognizes the images as CD-R images, not HD-BURN images. I'm assuming the processes are difference because there are different options for them in Nero.

I suppose my best option now is to burn a music CD and try that. I would ultimately like to figure out a way to get SVCDs, though. I can't get my movies down to HD-BURN size with DVDShrink.

If you require authored DVD files (vob, ifo etc) SVCD resolution is outside DVD specs. DVD's can be made with full DVD resolution or half-DVD (=CVD) resolution.

One thing you could try is setting DVD2SVCD level to advanced
Then in Frameserver tab, select CVD as the frame size
Set your disc size to 1400
Don't make images.

Then use TMPGEnc DVD Author or jsoto's DVDAuth plugin (search the advanced forum for a download link) to author the bbMPEG muxed .mpg files to DVD files and then burn those.

You would end up with a HDBurn-sized miniDVD. Whether or not your player will play this is debatable but if your burniong software will only do HDburn with DVD video files I can't really see another way.
