Test out my DVD burns onto a DVDRW before burning the DVDR?

Well.. to test if there's any problems with the disc structure (nagivational info, menu links etc) yes, but there's still the possibility that your DVD-R might be crappy or your player won't accept it. So if you're stripping out extras you might want to try an RW, but it won't protect you from bad burns and such.
