Ok. I've read the forum (obv. not all of it) and have tried out anydvd-dvd2one-copy2dvd. Not bad, just not enough of what I want to do.
I have a lite-on 16X reader and plextor 708 burner. My main goal is DVD->DVD transfer, while removing the fbi/start/end credits. Just the movie. No extras. NO Hard Drive image or 2nd-3rd steps....
Is there any setup up that would do it? DVD Shrink + ???
Trying to bypass the Hard Drive part of backing up....
Am I searching for the Holy Grail? or does this really exist?
thanks for all responses.

Yes easy just do a re-author in Shrink and drag the main movie over into the re-author window, delete all title sets except for the main movie the uncheck the subs and langs you don't want, and let it rip then you could use a combo of ImgTool classic and DVD Decrypter to burn it.
Thats as easy as it gets afaik but you'll need to use your HD!

I agree with what syzygytec says, but it will use your hard drive.
To the best of my knowledge, there is no tool available today that will do what you want without using the hard drive. I believe even the DVD->DVD transcoders use approximately 5 GB of hard drive while they're transcoding - they just clean up after themselves once they finish burning the transcode.

plenty of DVDShrink guides here
http://www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php
don't forget to untick 'combine titles', as it may create larger than normal movies
I'm sure ddlooping will come along and point you to the exact guide you require ;)

thanks guys.
I kind of figured if it had been done or was easy to do, the talk would have been all over this site.
thanks for the heads up. Seems to be a large varience on quality of output by the differnet programs.
Just a case of testing 'til you find what works for you.

I'm sure there is a program that transcodes direct to DVD and uses a temp folder on your HD for segments (CloneDVD), so if you use this along with ANYDVD which allows reading direct from any DVD then you could do DVD to DVD-R in one step and one guy mentions it takes 25 mins at 4X burning HERE (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67182)
I recommend against this direct method as the DVD may have read errors during processing creating a coaster. Another thing is checking playback of the files before burning, again not possible with the direct method
all a matter of choice and time restrictions but then again who needs to backup loads of DVD's in a day unless you are a serious collector ;)

nope, no need to do lots of disk a day. just backup the disk the grandkids use everyday. They seem to think the disk are great sliders, coasters, donuts, etc. Everything except fragile.
I've bought my last Lion King.
thanks for the pointers, directions and Welcome Aboard.

lol, :D, I see your point though as I guess a backup wouldn't last long in the hands of a youngster, never mind an adult, so it would need a few backups for one DVD every so often
for the kiddies DVD's, for the price of one blank you could make a backup of the backup so then it's just a simple DVD copy without any fuss if it's ever required again ;)

Just a followup to my post/Question.
Heed the advice of the forum. DVD->DVD is not ready for prime time yet. Way too many variables. I produced 12 coasters (+R,-R and -RW)in my quest for the direct route.
All in all it was a good learning experience. I used ShrinkDVD with CopyToDVD and Alcohol120. Then I used anydvd+DVD2one+Copy2DVD. One disney movie and one Matrix.
Perhaps there is more sophisticated software that can do the job? Just getting started with DVD backup, I just wanted simplicity. So don't flame me for being a Newb. The direct route didn't work for me. YMMV.

Next Q.
What's a good player for my Home Theater? My Toshiba SD-2710 won't read the +R format. I've looked it up on the web with numerous folks saying it will work with +R. Should I try a different vendor for the +R or just buy a better player? All of the disks played back on both the Lite-one 16x and the plextor 708. (with anydvd turned off)
Thanks for the help.

Check out this guide http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/
for using DVDShrink + AutoShrink. It does use the harddrive but using this combo allows you to put the original into the DVD rom drive and a blank in the DVD-R drive and it will rip, transcode, create an image and burn, all with one click. Never used it (because I don't have two DVD drives), but if mrbass has a guide for it then it usually is works pretty good.

The good player question is incredibly hard to answer. Perhaps someone here will make a recommendation, but I can't (my stand alone player isn't even made anymore).
I will however point you to www.dvdrhelp.com. They maintain a very large DVD player compatibility list. It's based on user experience, so you have to take it with some salt, but it can be a valuable source of information when deciding on what player to buy.
