DivX 5.1.1 MP4 compatibility

question: is it possible (and if so, how?) to make a MPEG-4 compliant video stream using 5.1.1??? I've tried EVERYthing, disabled b-frames+GMC+QPel, but I cannot find any way to make it compatible.

Has anybody else had any success with making MPEG-4 video using DivX 5.1.1? I've been using MPEG4ip 0.9.8.4, VirtualDub 1.5.10, and foobar2000 0.76 to encode my video and audio.

XviD 1.0beta2 works just fine, but DivX won't. Is it a matter of tools? codec options? the codec itself (my current suspicion)??? I've looked everywhere and people all say it should be compatible!!! help!!!!

It should be fairly compliant.

If you remux it into an MP4 using the 3ivx Media Muxer then the 3ivx Muxer will perform some magic to create a compliant MP4.

Is there some end purpose in mind. Did you want to try and play the file in hardware or something?

SeeMore: I'm trying to create MP4 files for playback in hardware and on my computer. I can do it using XviD, but DivX isn't cooperating.

Stux: thanks for the idea! I've been hesitant to try the 3ivx tools because A) the aac encoder and decoder is limited to 30 days (I just got the message today when I tried to play another MP4 file) and B) Graphedit looks like a fairly unpleasant piece of software. Also, I've tried the 3ivx codec and got some bad results.
I'll give the 3ivx muxer a shot and see what happens :) I'll even use the 3ivx 4.5 again, and see if I can improve on last time.

Thanks!! I sometimes use DivX5.0.2. This fairly old version of DivX can generate MP4 video only files.

And under the 'Advanced Perameters' tab you can import DivX.avi streams with MP3 audio and generate MP4 container files that retain the MP3 audio stream!

Not many players can play the encodes though. Not even DivX's own player. However, Nero's ShowTime player can!

Have you tried Recode2 yet?

the problem I have with Recode2 is that the files are unplayable. Nero's ShowTime won't show the video, but audio plays nicely. I've made 5 DVD backups using Recode2, and the video preview has never worked either - maybe a NeroDigital codec problem? But I've reinstalled again and again and tried on all my computers, with same exact results. I actually managed to play a movie successfully once, but I closed Showtime and tried again and it went back to usual behaviour.. I've installed Showtime on three other computers, and only the audio works. Every time. I talked to Nero support about it, and they sent me the link to download ShowTime - exactly the same version I'm already using.
I would like to use DivX Pro 5.02 (like the manual quantizer constraints), but it doesn't produce high motion video as nicely as 5.1.1. In fact, it's terrible in comparison, and I've done extensive permutation testing with all the versions of DivX (only on one test clip however).

I'm waiting for an update to ShowTime, then maybe I'll Recode again :)

These DivX 5.0.2 produced MP4s are some of the least compliant MP4s I've seen ;)

Because video only streams work fine with my Xcard. Combined Mpeg4 video/MP3 audio MP4 encodes are/were always a bit unstable though!

I'm using the promo version (which sadly only offers 2Ch AAC audio) but everything is fine with me. As long as I don't activate VisionExpress!

You could also create an MP4 video only stream using DivX5.0.2
Then create an MP4 AAC audio only stream using QuickTime Pro
Open MP4UI and import the MP4 AAC audio only stream. Extract the audio only stream and save it as an .aac audio only stream.
Open MP4UI again, import the MP4 video only stream. Then 'add' the .aac audio only stream.

When you try an exit MP4UI it will offer to optimize and create a new file.

Which should now be an MP4 compliant Mpeg4/AAC file!

Easy... I think!

I've been very surprised with Nero's ShowTime player, it seems to be able to play anything. Including Mpeg4/MP3 .MP4 encodes which are not spec compliant either!

I don't know, this time last week my Xcard could not even play Recode2 spec compliant MP4 encodes. And now (after an firmware upgrade) it's able to play even non-spec compliant MP4 encodes!

Well, Ahead did have a couple of spec compliancy problems at least in the first version of Recode

We notice these things because we have to add work-arounds or translation/reparation code to our muxers/splitters to handle various MP4s in various states of broken-ness.

True, some broken MP4s will work in some players, but for the broadest interoperability you need MP4s which are as compliant as possible, also one of the other things to do is not specifically go out of your way to create 'compliant' MP4s which will break 'weaker' players (such as the Philips or QuickTime MP4 players)

I figure it won't be that long before things settle down, MP4 is beginning to pick up steam quite rapidly

I'm very pleased it's finally here!

I would like to play around with 3IVX a bit more but I can't quite seem to get my head around it. Basically I need an application (with a nice GUI) which will easily allow me to input a stream, fiddle about with it (with the aid of check boxes, etc). And then export the resulting MP4 file.
