Look here (http://www.arachnotron.nl/videocap/site/capture_area2.html)

and

here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66191)

for some info on other cards. Most chips with a scaler do resizing.

edit
By the way, the pixellation around the shoulder straps might also be caused by bad comb filtering. This gives artefacts around the edges of sudden color changes. The Philips SAA7108 (which is the chip on your card) has a modern adaptive comb filter; the 878 hasn't.

If you use s-video instead of composite (RCA) it will mostly dissapear.

Looking in the datasheet, the SAA7108 also has a scaler. If it actually did any scaling in your capture depends on how it was programmed by the driver and the resolution you used.

:o You are welcome.

Looking at your pic's, I would guess your saa7108 captures the full ITU frame (53.333 µs) and resizes this to 640, while the avery captures the standard frame from the conexant reference drivers, 50.96 µs, and scales that to 640 pixels. (unless you used the BTwincap drivers with the avery, in which case the cap's aspect ratio is correct)

I also think the brightness is too high on the Aver. Try to lower it and the 'pixel noise' may reduce, and you may see more detail in the brighter spots. The BT878 is really not a bad chip. S-video would be much better. :)

Try capping your original source at 720x480 for the videocard, 688x480 for the Avery.

if you pad the second cap with 16 black pixels on each side to a total of 720x480 you should end up with two identical pics as far as aspect ratio is concerned.

Pixellation will remain though.

I guess I should have tried 720x480 to really determine if it's messing with anything. I'll have to try that next.

As far as what the caps look like, you are not doing a fair compare. The driver on the Aver is not set correctly. The brightness is way too high. That is why you can not see the lines in the bad guys teeth (warrio?) Luigi's glove blends into the background. This is not because the Aver has low detail resolution. You are clipping the colors by pushing them off of the scale. Grey is blending into white.

At least that's what I think :)

After you adjust the brightness, do a cap at 360 and 368 and compare. ;) I'd bet 368 is much better even though you only have 8 more pixels.

The pixelization doesn't change between the resolutions, so I'm just guessing it has something to do with the conexant chipset's filters

see this (http://members.aol.com/ajaynejr/vidcomb.htm) link for info on what combfilters are and what sort of artefacts they produce.

Th SAA7108 has an 4 line adaptive 2D comfilter, the BT878 only a simple notch and comb.
