Whenever i try to play a mpeg2 video in WMP9 cpu usage goes to 100%. The problem also occured in WMP8 before i upgraded to version 9. Mpeg1 videos still play fine. I do have a mpeg2 decoder installed as i also have Powerdvd on my computer, 100% usage also occurs when using ahead's mpeg2 decoder. I thought it would just be a matter of going into device manager and removing all video codecs, however as soon as i close the video codecs window and immediately reopen it, all the codecs that i deleted are back. How do i remove the damn video codecs?, or how can i identify what codecs WMP9 requests when it tries to play a video so i can narrow the problem down?

I just downloaded media player classic 6.4.7.3 and the mpeg2 videos play fine with it. Another win for windows media player:(, i would however like to know what makes windows media player so crap.

Media Player Classic has its own MPEG-2 Decoder, so that probably helps that. You've probably got a really cr*ppy filter like Ligos installed thats overriding all the others. Load up Media Player 6.4 (Goto Start->Run then type mplayer2 and hit enter". Load up a MPEG-2 and then goto the properties. By looking through the filter tab you'll see what filters are being used...That will help you get rid of it.

We have a winner, thanks Nic. It was the Ligos filter buggering up playback in WMP. All fixed now. Though i still going to use media player classic, it is a much better player by far.
