Hi. I've been using IC7 with my other pc, with DVD-RW drive for a while, but I have just installed it on my new laptop and I can't get a disc to finish.

Dell inspiron 8600, 1.7m, 1gb ram, 60gb hd, (hl-st-dn 4040n?) dvd+rw.

I completed a direct copy of a dvd-r disc and saved it to hd. I finally found the drive update download and upgraded IC so it recognised my drive as a writer. I then tried to copy the .pdi hd image onto a DVD+R, and all seems fine, until I get to 100% and the pc just says finishing disc for the next 6 weeks!

Firstly can I do a straight copy of a dvd-r to dvd+r? Are there format problems? If there are, what is the best way to overcome them?

Note that I am using XP Pro and am not sure how to close down the none essential tasks, (I had no problem in win98, systray & explorer were all that was needed), but I don't know about XP. Is there a program that closes down processes automatically? IC7 seems to have problems working with background tasks.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help. :D

I would suggest you write to the Hard Drive first as DVD to DVD-R can be expensive if it fails for any reason

did you try the DVD that hung at the end of burning?. Did you use IC to burn it?

if you used IC then you could try extracting the image and burning with another software or use a software/method that burns PDI images

use CTRL+ALT+DEL in XP to close any programs running

you can also use the msconfig in the START/RUN box and change what starts up on your PC. If you aren't comfortable doing this then I think TweakXP is one program that will allow you to select what starts when you boot up your PC. I'm always using msconfig on people's PC's as there are so many programs that add themselves to the startup list even when they are not needed wasting resources and making boot up times ridiculously long

Thanks for the info. :D

I made a hd image then tried to burn a dvd+r. Is there a problem when copying between dvd formats ie., + and -?

I did try to burn the .pdi file with IC, and the disc is not recognised by any of my pc's.

I have just downloaded a .pdi to .iso converter, so maybe it will help.

I understand about closing down programs, but what about the next tab "processes"? There are loads of files working away. Do you know of a prog that allows you to temporarily force xp to close non essential progs/processes?

I don't think you'll have any problem copying between +R and -R, any more than you would have copying from DVD to either +R or -R (in other words, no problems).

The processes topic is pretty complicated - I think it's beyond the scope of what can be discussed in any reasonable amount of time. Instead I will refer you to BlackViper.com (http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm) which will give you information about many, many services (and the process names that go with them). You should be able to go through the list in your task manager and identify which ones belong to windows, and perhaps (by elimination) which one(s) belong to any errant programs.

I have used EndItAll before and I'm sure it works on XP

here is a link for you
