You know, I am going to try dvd2svcd to back-up LOTR Fellowship (non extended version) to DVD. I have used DVDShrink and DVD2ONE and like tools for some time. My question with dvd2svcd/dvd is this..what happens to the layer break? My intuition says that since you convert to AVI before CCE that the layer break will disappear. Is this the case? Sorry if it is a simple question but my searches could not find an answer. I just want to be sure I do not need to get rid of the break before re-encoding the DVD to put on a DVD-R.
Thanks
Ron.

Hi Ron.
Welcome to the forum. I hope your stay is fruitful and enjoyable. Regarding the layer break, your instincts serve you well. The break you see when playing the disc is while the laser refocuses during layer change. The re-encoded mpeg files on your hard disc are a frame-by-frame copy of the original. The fact that the first frame on layer 2 of the disc takes longer to read due to the refocusing needed is therefore immaterial. This is solely characteristic of the medium the data is stored on and has no bearing on the data itself. There is no pause in the backup DVD.
So in short, don't worry about it!
Just one newbie error I will pick you up on for future reference. We are justifiably fond of users (like yourself) who use the search feature. If a thread title gives indication of the topic of the thread it makes sifting through search results for relevant threads a lot easier. So a title such as "Will layer breaks cause problems?" (or similar), would be far more use than "a simple question". No big deal but please think your thread titles through more carefully in future.
Best of luck with your backup.

Thanks....I have changed my title to something better for search purposes vis-a-vis other users. This looks like it will be fun to try. I am glad I do not need to change anything regarding the layer break. Do you think DVD2SVCD (DVD in my case) will produce a good backup (movie only). I tried DVDShrink and Nero Recode 2.0. Both were good, but I am looking for something a bit cleaner. Any other thoughts anyone?

I mean no disrespect to DVD Shrink or Nero which are both excellent pieces of software and good at what they do. However the quality comparison with the DVD2SVCD results will knock your socks off!
As for other software to use - try what the heck you like! A full re-encode with CCE will match anything out there. You will like the results.
The only (possible) improvement is to encode using the D2SRoBa plugin. Read the sticky on it and perhaps a search. When you understand what it does you can decide whether to give it a go.
Edit: Thanks for editing your title :)
Much appreciated.
