i recently purchase a new Western Digitial 120gb 7200rpm 8mb something hard drive and was wondering if i should get the 3 years exended warranty.

i don't want to waste $25 if nothing happens over the next 3 years, i also don't want to waste even more money sending it to WD over & over if something does go wrong, my last HD lasted over 3 1/2 years, probably longer if one pin didn't break off.

the HD cost me $78 after the $40 mail-in rebate (better sent it in fast)

please share your opinions, specify if you have the same HD.

Dani82, why not resolder the pin with a techenician?. I always do resoldering on breaking of such pins. Even though it will not be a proper way, these HDDs last for several years. I even have 2 HDDs of same kind.(No problem with speed, DMA ripping..etc etc)

Drive 1:
IBM hdd died after 6 months. Got a brand new one (even more rpms - old one: 5400rpm - new one: 7200).
That died again after some time and again I got the newest model.
This is one is still well and alive and has about 6-7 months left of warranty :D

Drive 2:
Samsung hdd died few months after purchase. Got a new one (same model).
About 2 1/2 years of warranty left.

All the replacements cost me almost nothing - I brought them back where I got them and 2-3 weeks later I got a new one.

I'll say go with the extra warranty. Though I didn pay for extra warranty - the drives normal warranty was 3 years.
Its a shame they dont give you as much warranty anymore.
Some hdd manufacturers still do so (like Samsung).

even though the pin broke, i still works as long as the pin is where it should be, but it might be better to get it fixed, any guesses on how much it will cost? it probably doesn't even matter, my current pc, doesn't have enough room nor power to support a 2nd HD.

the extended warranty is through Fry's Electronic, if it breaks, they will fix it\replace it\or upgrade it (if it's out-of-stock); 2-3 weeks! + paying for shipping, i don't think that's going to be an option.

i got 2 weeks left to decide, and still don't know what to do, WWJD?:sly:

unfortunately, i had too many HD that broke down. both WD and Maxtor. it could be a PSU, but then again, i know others whom HD failed. i say it's worth it. although imho, it should have been less than $25.

the price of the warranty is based on the final price of the HD

$15 00-75
$25 76-150
$35 151 & up

these listings may vary depending on how much i was really paying attention.

Funny thing... the IBM drive I've been talking about has just decided to not even spin up.
I've found out that the power lines on it may have been damaged. Playing around with it made it spin up again. I was able to back up all stuff. Its only a matter of time until it totally breaks. Good thing is that their is still some warranty left on it :D
