Best Choice between Size and Quality??

Hi,
I have got the Question that most likely have been asked b4 and is not that simple to answer,
so i'll put it as easy as I can .

I have Dr.DivX the latest version (v1.04) + DivX codec v5.1.1
I have few DVD movies in PAL (Most: Slow motion - not speed/high Speed moving objects) that every Film/Movie is about 80Min' - 90 Min'.
my traget file will be 690MB-700MB (One medium).

I have 2 Options:
1) Divx 1 Pass Quality
2) Divx 2 Pass (I think it meens VBR, but I don't Know)

lte's say that the configurations of both are the same.

which one will most probeby give me the best
quality on my 690-700Mb Avi File.


Question 2:
I want to Know what Option in the DivX Options
is the Best for my needs (as mentioned above)

1) Bidirectonal Encoding?
2) Quater Pixl?
3) GMC?
4) Pre Processing?
5) Psychovisual Enhancment? Fast or Slow?

Please note: my movies are about 1Hr & 20Min each and output file is about 700Mb.

the Movies (on the DVD ) are usely an Analog
Movies that have been put on a DVD (not the Greatest Quality), my goal is Lose as little Quality
as Posible on my End/Output File (700MB).

BTW- I don't think I have to DeInterlace them, they were fine when I used the Defualt settings.

2) if you want to use divx5 than at least dont use dr.divx :D
3) use 2pass, bi-enc and qpel

Hi SnakEye, Welcome to Doom9 forums!!

As far as I know quality based encoding cannot predict final size accurately. So if you are "what ever size - I would go" fan then use quality based encoding. This gives better quality than 2-pass method, bcoz there is no size restriction.

As you are size concerned, and want to put in 1CD(700MB), I would say 2-pass encoding is the way to go.

For different settings you mentioned, better to :search:, bcause it is a personal matter. Every one has his own favourite setings. If you want to hear mine: I only use Bidirectional encoding.;)

Btw, there is a new tool on the planet called AutoGK (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64266), everything is automated and IMHO, its definetly better than Dr.DivX. And also supports XviD. Try it and report back.;)

I've put numerous 80-90 minute DivX5 movies on 1 CD with really excellent quality. I suggest using bi-directional, GMC, Qpel, slow PV, Lanczos resize, and 64 kb/s Ogg Vorbis for audio. I'm also of the belief that 6 passes can help for 1CD encodes.

To do this you will need Gordian Knot (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63271), OggMux (http://koepi.roeder.goe.net/oggmux.html), and a Vorbis audio encoder such as HeadAC3he (http://mitglied.lycos.de/darkav/). Guides for using all these programs can be found at Doom9.org.

Yes, but for high quality encodes (Quant2) XviD is really much better than DivX 5.1.1 !!!

Quantizer2 / No B-Frames / No QP / Fast PVE / Slowest
Size: 173.719.552 Bytes / Avg. PSNR: 47.42 / Time: About 30:13 min. (2600XP)


Best PSNR result with Q2 in XviD v.1 Beta2 was....

Quantizer2 / No B-Frames / H.263 / VHQ 1 / QPel
Size: 129.744.896 Bytes / Avg. PSNR: 48.62 / Time: About 09:03 min. (2600XP)

Well not to go against my new favourite friend (Mr bond) on the forum. But I personally would not use Qpel.

I would 'always' generate a min 2pass encode, and maybe select BiDi!

Are they your own home movies SnakEye?
Are you in a PAL or NTSC region?

Hi guys, 1st of all thankyou all for trying helping me.

about Xvid, I am sorry to tell you , but I got better quality
in DivX then Xvid, the Picture in Xvid was to Grainy,
so I chose Divx , Since it gave me better Quality on my End File(700MB), I ussed Vidomi, and trust me I read alot about Xvid , and I tried all diffirent kinds of settings, but I never got to the Quality
that DivX gave me.
My Movies are all PAL format (most of them are Personal Movies that where filmed on Sony "Digital8").

about Dr.Divx, it's not that I love it , it's just the only program that I know that is very simple to use, I will definently try your
Avise and try "AutoGK".

I have not videoed anything using a Sony Digital8 camera.

Was DrDivX able to see and control the camera digitally (from the FireWire port) or did you have to use the cameras analog video/audio out?

my Videos were already placed on a DVD (MPEG2), so all I had to do
is RIP & Encode from a VOB File.
