loads of mistakes will cause this
have you got VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders on your dvdr?
Does your standalone play DVD-r properly?
Does yuor standalone play this make of DVD-r properly?

Yup, DVD R player plays the dvd-r brand no problem
Problem duplicated when i tried a different brand and a DVD-RW as well
DVD player has no problems playing DVD-R's
VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders are all correct
Used both CopyToDVD v2.2.10 and NERO 6 ultra to burn to a video dvd using 4x write for DVD and 1x write to a PRINCO DVDRW they did the same thing, failed to play on the standalone, but the burned dvd's worked when put into a dvd reader on the pc.
Ever seen how a PAL Playstation 2 game looks when you put it into a NTSC USA modchipped ps2 ? (how it scrolls vertically) well this is what im saying happens when i try to play the dvd copy on the standalone player... like that..fast scrolling video ...
Any other possibilities such as something i can look at using ifoedit or other utils that would tell us more?
I looked at the movie using DVD Decryptor and the movie was region free already.
There was no menu just the movie itself.

Just for everyone's knowledge I found a solution thanks to Swytch
The movie was in PAL format.
To convert the movie from PAL to NTSC here's what I did that worked 100% and re-burned to DVD worked fine!
Tools:
AVI2DVD v1.77.3 to extract audio from existing VOB files to WAV and
create a D2V file for TMPGEncPlus 2.5 to use for extracting Mpeg video data
TMPGencPlus 2.5 to encode *.d2v and *.wav into M2V file
TMPGdvd Author to create DVD Project
NERO 6.0 Ultra to burn Movie
1) Start DVD2AVI 1.77.3
2) Select FILE, OPEN and select the first vob file for the PAL movie
(Note: Goes without saying that the VOB must already be decoded !)
3) DVD2AVI will show you a list of 1 to 4 vobs (or more depends on movie)
4) The last one should be selected and highlighted. Select the last one because it will generate the wav file for all them and the necessary D2V files.
5) Select AUDIO, OUTPUT METHOD, DECODE TO WAV (AC3, LPCM)
6) Click File, Save Project (Make sure you have space free)
7) After your done this close DVD2AVI your done in here.
8) Open TMPGEnc Plus 2.5
9) Select File, Project Wizard, DVD, NTSC
10) DVD2AVI will have created a special .d2v video file index for the VOB files, use that for the video file for TMPGEnc
11) This points to the vob files and indicates where video is starting/ending etc. so the VOB files STILL need to be on your hd at this point.
12) Select the Wav File that was output by DVD2AVI for the audio stream
13) Just use defaults for the rest and start the conversion
Typically this works without any adjustments necessary, learn the fine tuning on your own its not covered here.
14) A hour (or more :) later come back it will be done processing (hopefully) You should end up with the necessary files for your DVD authoring software to generate your final DVD.
15) Start TMPGEnc DVD Author to auther the new dvd using the output results from TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 and generate the dvd.
16) Use NERO 6.0 to burn.
Hmm think i covered everything here.
If you have any problems post a response i'll try and help ya
To make a note about AVI2DVD:
You can do the vob files individually to generate individual wav files for each of the vobs and also a unique .D2V file for each one and then when rebuilding the DVD using DVD authoring software you can omitt whatever parts of the dvd didnt interest you.
CAVEAT:
Sure, you loose the menus in this approach but i was desparate and desparation means loosing a bit for the main goal of watching the movie.

Yea, I knew it must be a PAL movie when you said it scrolls.

Sometimes you can get away with a simple method of converting PAL to NTSC. Open VIDEO_TS.IFO in ifoedit and doubleclick on every line in the lower part of the screen that says "PAL". A box pops up with many options, one being NTSC or PAL. Just click on NTSC and OK. You won't see it change until you go to a different line in the IFO. Do the same for each IFO. Save and get vts sectors. This will usually work for just the main movie. The menus will be screwed up because they're differnt sizes in the two formats. Hope this helps.
