TMPGenC rejects avi file format

I have an avi file that i have run through VirtualDub to separate the avi video from the audio. The audio was saved as a wav file. When i tried to feed the video file into TMPGenC i got a message that the file had an invalid format. I tested the file with Windows media player and am able to view the file. Is there any way to process this file with TMPGenC.

Tried the following suggestion but it did not solve the problem.

- Go into the option->environmental setting in TMPGEnc, and click on the tab VFAPI plug-in. You will see two AVI entries. I put the AVI2(OpenDML) File Reader at a priority of 1 and the AVI VFW compatibility Reader at 0.

What codec is the video. Windows media player can and will temporairily dowload a codec. Make sure you have a valid decompressor install. You cab use GSpot to identify the codec.

Thanks for the quick response. Ok, I downloaded GSpotv 2.21 and installed same. Next clicked on view and the following is the list of identified codecs. Not sure what to do next. Only one that looks strange is the last line about vfw. Await your next suggestion.

Raise the Priority of the DirectShow Multimedia File Reader, this should help.

Thanks that did it. Now when I went to start TMPGenC process it said I needed to install mpeg2 to be able to play the movie. From that note from TMPGenC can you tell me what to get next.

That sounds like to pop-up warning box. You last post shows you have a mpeg2 decoder on your system. Close the box and encode.

I have an avi file of about 700 meg. The file was viewed with window media player and contains both video and audio. The total duration is about 2 hours and 20 minutes.

I have processed it with virtualdub to split off the audio. The audio file is about 90 meg. I next opened TMPGenC to begin the creation of the mpg file. I went through all of the setup steps and then began the creation process. After about 15 minutes of the analysis phase the program just shuts down. Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem. If you need the exact time according to the time scale I can sit and observe the process until it quits.

No error messages just a blank screen.

Some additional information and question.

I saved the log trail in notepad and see that the last frame number shown is:
frame= 14256 ( 16.0) Bitrate: 1264 kbps Motion: 0.36 MotionScale: 0.00 CQ: 48.63

When the program quit it said an error log was being created but I do not know the name of the file or where it is saved to be able to provide additional data that could help resolved the problem encountered in side of the file.

Its possible you have a currupt frame or 2 at that point in you avi. You can test this with virtualdub. Load the file and advance to the spot where it quits and then press play.

I followed your instructions and advanced to frame 14256 and then pressed play for the next 100 frames. Nothing strange appeared on the video.

Any other ideas?

When I try to play the avi with Windows media Player it works fine both video and audio.

I have another avi file that i try to get TMPGenC to process but it says that can not open or unsupported .

If I try to preprocess the file with Virtualdub I get the following error:

Virtualdub (v1.51) requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatable codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such a those used by Windows Media Player are not suitable.

I have run Gspot and the list of codecs are inside of this thread. Any idea where to locate the one I need.
