After making my aac audio, which OagMachine saves as .mp4 audio files, MPC keeps trying to use 3ivx codec(which I uninstalled) instead of CoreAac. When I make a Matroska file, MPC uses CoreAac. Any way to change the association?

btw i also have 3ivx (make sure you have the latest version) installed and coreaac is used by default

If you are using mkv entirely for video, then there is no need of 3ivX codec installed. The mkv splitter inbuilt in MPC can send data to coreAAC.

@Tuning
but he wants to play audio AAC(inside MP4).
In this case he needs the 3ivX Splitter.
@sumpm1
did you enabled "Allow unsupported Decoders" in the 3ivX Splitter configurationn (properties)? ;)
If not, enable it. Otherwise the 3ivX Splitter will only try to connect to the 3ivX Decoder.

filewalker, As we normally do; Tested!.:D The condition is viceversa. That is AAC with *.aac need 3ivX and AAC in mp4 doesn't need 3ivX. I can confirm this a I could play a mp4(of course, aac inside) with Core AAC only. ( I have not installed 3ivx)
And I'm thankful to you filewalker for giving this information with mkv long time ago in other thread. :p

Something against the 3ivx audio decoder ?

@Tunning
But if I open a .MP4 file (only AAC inside) in Graphedit ( or make the Graph manually), it's not possible to connect the filesource.mp4 with CoreAAC directly.
Grpahedit makes automatically this graph: sourcefilter.mp4 --> 3ivXSplitter-->CoreAAc-->Audio Renderer.
For .AAC:
...wasn't there this "AAC parser filter" for decoding unwrapped AAC streams in DirectShow in combination with CoreAAC/3ivXDecoder ? :rolleyes:
Maybe I'm too stupid ATM...because I'm learning about 18 hours/day for a big exam at university...:( ...and I need more sleep
edit:

No,the 3ivx audio decoder is better for me at the moment because the "downmix to 2 channels"-button works on the fly...this function doesn't work with CoreAAC(I have to stop&play again for getting the downmix enabled/disabled.
But the adavntage of CoreAAC is for me that it's for free...

Okey found out what is causing that. In MPC there is an audio switcher allowing playback of *.mp4 with coreAAC. Thus this is only applicable to MPC. This file plays in any player if you have morgan stream switcher.
So exactly 3ivx splitter/streamswitcers is needed for mp4 playing.
Hope that was causing it.
btw, I'm too learning for my exam tommorow. What a coincidence!

The decoder is excellent and provides to me the same quality as CoreAAC.

Not at all !! Actually, i wonder what your license says about implementation of both your AAC decoder and MPEG4 video decoders filters into other distribution packages ? ( too lazy to read it up ;) ... )
I really loved to see the matroska installation packs using 'legal' decoder filters, to avoid any kind of problems for both users and us .... possible ?

I've also never read the 3ivx license =) (shame on me). But anyway, you have to be aware that providing an AAC or mp4v encoder or decoders binaries even for free, even opensource, has a cost for those distributing them (MPEG fees) ... That's why I bet that 3ivx Tech would bill you to have the right to repackage our filters. But feel free to contact 3ivx@3ivx.com.

Actually... MPEGLA does not wanna take a stand either way about this. Meaning that... technically you could distribute compiled code for free as long as you meet some requirements... the things is... it is they who judge what those requirements are. And naturally they do not want it published in any normal way and want checks in place.
The same thing can be said for uncompiled code as well. If they wished or any of the 19 member companies complained they could simply (at the snap of a lawyers finger) shut down any OS MPEG-4/AAC related project they wished. They are the ones to judge if you are 'Educational' or not. It's a shame the license is so UNCLEAR on this....
Christian we can DISTRO AAC Legally at anytime we want... all we need to do is contact VIALICENSING (http://www.vialicensing.com/developments/avc/license.terms.html) and:
- Put up a non-refundable deposit of $15,000
- Pay $0.25 USD per downloaded 'Matroska Pack'
You guys wanna get a KICK..... get a load of this MPEG-4 / AAC License Calculator. You will be amazed at the actual costs.

No. You obviously have Nero installed. MPC can't read MP4 files on its own, but when you uninstall 3ivx or de-register its filters you still can play MP4 files because of the DirectShow filters that are installed by Nero. They seem to have a low priority but nonetheless they can read MP4 and the splitter connects then to the higher priority CoreAAC.

Thanks for correcting me again!
In filters section of MPC there was no filters found, So I thought there wasn't any. So mistake again. Yes I have installed nero 6.3.

I think it's kind of interesting that AVC works out to be a better deal than regular old MPEG-4 video. On the audio side, HE-AAC is a *horrible* deal! Coding Technologies is too greedy - I don't think we will ever see HE-AAC support in the sort of cheap, portable flash-memory players HE would be perfect for.

I was unaware that 3ivx was a splitter. I thought it was just a decoder. I installed it before CoreAAC. It resulted in very high CPU usage when reading mp4 audio?????? After I installed CoreAAC, 3ivx was still used for mp4 audio alone, but video files with mp4 in them used the CoreAAC filter, low CPU.

i dont know what damn ct thinks, they also killed mp3pro because of licensing issues...
on the other side i understand why h.264/avc is cheaper than normal mpeg-4, they want people to use the newer/better technolgies, in fact it has a great chance to win the battle against wmv9 for the next dvd successor standard

splitter, muxer, decoder, encoder...
make sure you used the latest version, the old ones were buggy
and make sure you tick the "allow unsupported decoders" option in the splitter, to make it connect to coreaac, ffdshow etc...
