Here's an MPEG encoder test I dug up on Trai's site (you will note that it's by a HIGHLY-esteemed author!) :)

I guess, the Author should have a discussion about ProCoder with mb1 here, might be very interesting. ;)

A word about Luma-Range: There are several Discussions about that here. Without an Information about the used DV-Codec, the Test-Result isn't really clear.

Kika, hehe :D

Seems the author used a dv codec which compresses its encodes to 16-235 and expands them again when decoding. For example MS DV does that. Uglier than that MS DV loses about 1% luminance in every render generation.

Procoder does not affect luminance if used the right way.
Feeding it with a MS DV there will be a problem as Procoder uses internally the Canopus DV (which is known not to change the ranges). So the expanding decompression (of MS DV) is not present.
Thus things get changed.
Therefore Procoder 1.5 delivers '601 expand and shrink filters'.

There is no need for that if you capture and render with Canopus DV.

Finally most mpeg decoders only show 16-235 (f.e. PowerDVD, Ligos and cheap dvd players).

So it is no wonder the author gets confused :D
I think he has made some mistakes ...

As ever, mb1, I bow in your presence! I'm not worthy! :D

ahh, good old trai

he seems to be a 'genius' toward apple dvd software (if that isnt an oxymoron) but it does look like he needed to read up on a few things before releasing that comparison, but the overall article holds a bit of value.

wonder what the responses to that are like on the members forum...

Actually, Trai was not responsible for that one, mate. It was Professor Uli Plank.

Subjectivity, subjectivity, subjectivity...ahh, yes! MPEG encoding - such a black art - dontcha just love it?! :D
