View Full Version : Does Recode 2 transcode even if compression ratio is 100%?

I suppose this question would equally pertain to DVDShrink...I sometimes do movies using only the movie track and the main audio track. Often, this leads to a size under 4.37 GB. Using the Big 3 method, I obviously didn't have to re-encode, simply author using Scenarist.

Using Recode 2, when the slider is all the way to right (indication 100% - ie. no compression), I have the impression that it's still "transcoding" the movie when creating the DVD Volume. I even have Deep Analysis turned off.

Can anyone confirm what it is indeed doing?

I have a Recode 2 backup made at 100%. I just demuxed the video of chapter 1 of the backup and did the same for chapter 1 of the original DVD. Both files are exactly the same size. So it looks like Recode did not transcode the material from original DVD when I made the backup.

I appreciate the feedback and the method for testing the results. I will try the same. Thanx!

The compression slider in Recode is letting you know what percentage of quality is being saved from the original stream. If it says "90%," then the stream will only be reduced by 10%. At 100%, there's no transcoding of the original stream at all; meaning, the stream's preserved at 100% quality.

The same rules apply to DVD Shrink, as well.

Load a movie to encode.

Compress only the Menu and/or Extras, but not the main movie(100%)
Start encoding, call task manager a check if there is a diference in CPU load while doing the Menu/Extras and Main movie (use the preview check box to see what's running).

BTW my experience tell's me when the slider is 100% no re-encoding is done.

I just did a test on the movie Cypher (PAL DVD) with Recode 2.0.0.7 (100%) and DVDShrink V3.0 b5 (no compression). I did a movie only backup leaving two audio streams in the movie with both programs.

After that I demuxed the video streams from original, DVDShrink and Recode version.

Result: DVDShrink did not change the videostream, Recode did (in fact, the result was also 17000 KB smaller than DVDShrink's).

So it seems, only DVDShrink's "No Compression" is safe.

This is a really old thread now, but I have to bump it because I'd like to know the answer...can't find it anywhere.

When compression is set to 100%, no transcoding is happening. It's retaining the exact quality of the original title.
