View Full Version : DVDShrink Error

I've backupped DVD's for some time, but since a week ago most of them are to big to be burned (25 MB's to big or so..). I use a combination of DoItFast4U (1.4.0), ReAuthorist (1.0.0), BatchCCEWS (0.9.1.2), CCE (2.66) and Scenarist (2.6). The above problems began after upgrading DoItFast4U and BatchCCEWS.
I try to shrink the dvd to the right size, but keep getting the same error: "Encoding Error: Impossible program state occurred". I used Dvdshrink 2.3 for this and also 3.0 beta 5. What is the problem here?
Edit: Seems like all DVD's i've re-encoded so far suffer from this problem.

Has no-one encountered such a problem before?

The obvious solution would be to lower the size of the disc created with 25MB, ie. either changing the max size of the project or lowering the bitrate. Or installing an older version of the programs you upgraded ;-)
I know that whenever I've had both DVDShrink 2.3 and 3.0 give me that problem, there was some sort of defect with the .VOBs.

What was that defect and how did you solve it? Right now i'm trying some older versions of the programs so i'll be patient, for now...

I came here searching for this exact problem, (for the same reason) so you are not alone. While I can't say for sure this happens with every backup I do with the DIF4U method, I can say it happens with the majority. There may have been one or two that it didn't happen with, but I can't be sure. The resulting DVD's play fine on my standalone and PC though.
DVDShrink isn't the only one that has this problem, although other programs usually don't crash. They usually are missing large chunks of the DVD layout (usually the main movie).
I'm still searching the forums. If I find an answer I'll post back here.
As a temporary fix you could use rejig to shrink your .mpv file and then recreate the DVD with Scenarist, it would save you from re-encoding the entire movie again for a few MB.

So far, downgrading to DoCCE4U 1.0.1.5 and DoItFast4U didn't work and still no other programs works with it, so i'll stick with rejig. btw. Rejig also crashed when i use the DVD Backup mode

On my system shrink 2.3 works, but 3.0beta doesn't work anymore. I think this is due to a change or corruption in some system files. I would like to reinstall those files. I assume I need vbasic or something for shrink to run. Anyone know what system files I need?

You don't need to reinstall anything with DVD Shrink.
It comes in a zip file, so just delete the program, and re-download beta 5 from doom9.org!

I've wondered about this for a while now too. Not that I know why someone would habitually want to use dvdshrink after the big3, but once I decided to try it for myself and got the exact same error. I have no idea what the solution is, but the dvds play perfectly, so I don't worry about it.
Incidentally. If an 'impossible program state' occurs, doesn't that make it possible? ;)

No, not always. Only to the extent that if a possible program state never occurs, it becomes impossible ;-)

hehe touche! But I disagree. If it's possible to occur but never does, that doesn't decrease it's possibility of occurring. Especially if it occurs :P

Try to open every .ifo with dvdshrink, and see if it crashes always.
Then try opening problematic ifo with iofedit, select vob-extra and check:
correct Vob Unit (Navigation Pack) Pointers in Vob files
Correct original ifo files.

I'll have to give that a try robot1.
Eye's Only, the reason I sometimes want to run DVDShrink after Big3 is if it's a little oversized I could shrink the menus or perhaps an extra that I didn't re-encode.
