I don't fully understand those stuffs, i hope someone can help me.

XviD Max bitrate
Selecting the DXN HT PAL profile on XviD, the value is set to 4000.
DivX set the max selectable bitrate to 4000 too, but checking the vbv parameter, the value is 6951.2 (if i understand well, this is the maximum average bitrate in 3 seconds).
How those things works exactly on XviD and DivX?

XviD Max buffer size
With the above profile, XviD value is set to 3142656.
DivX set this to 3145728 and set the initial value to 2359296.
How this size is calculated?
Why DivX have 1 more parameter for this?

I'd like to understand those things because i'm experimenting with my standalone player, encoding at 720x576, 2-pass with br=4000 (i'm trying to reach the limit of my standalone).
Actually the video-only plays fine, but adding ac3 or mp3, i'm experiencing strange artifacts in some scenes (i suppose high bitrate scenes... i'm going to write a little tool to detect this).
Encoding with a br=2000, some artifacts goes... but some hard scenes still have problems.
So, i'd like to tweak those parameters in order to find the cause (actually i'm testing with DivX, waiting for XviD beta3 - 'cos i have an ESS chip).

Many thanks to everyone going to teach me!
