How to set avs file for anamorphic encodes?

Hum.. i've done some googling to find some info on the subject without success... even on the doom9 site... weird.
Im not sure about the quality i'll get.. but i wanna try it.

Do i just have to crop the source? Do i have to resize?
I use gordian knot to determine crop/resize with all my encodes. But How GK dont let me encode at 720xYYY.

This is the info i have for my video:
MPEG-2 / 720x480 (NTSC) / 16:9 / Letterboxed

Now, i have to cut the black lines right? to cut the black lines, i would normally crop(12,60,696,358).

1) in gknot set ar to 1:1 and crop away those black lines.
2) save your avs.
3) set right ar (16:9), set W/H modules to 1, and remember what you have in "width x height" field at the bottom.
4) encode avs (if you use gknot for this, get back to ar 1:1.
5) mux in mkv with remembered width and height.

also when you do cropping, two "Width x Height" fields (at the right and at the bottom) should contain equal values.
and no, you don't have to resize - delete resizing line in avs after saving it (you can edit avs script in gknot before encoding).

please, correct me if i'm wrong.

I got it. Cool :D

My original avi after crop and before MKV resize is 712 x 356.
Here's what i get in MPC: 712 x 356 (AR 352:145) witch gives me 704x290 as final result.

Am i OK here?

What about quality now. I do all my backups at 1120 megs (4 movies on 1 DVD-R). This same movie would be 640x272. But now, with the anamorphic thing in MKV, i get less bits per frame.. ?

What you guys think about anamorphic encodes?

No. Not with 290 height, you're not. It's only Mod 2. You better make that 704x288.
