Captures using VirtualDub and MPEG2 possible?

Hello, Friends,

May be this question has been already talked about here, but since I could not find it, I could ask again:

What the best solution for using VistualDub for capture directly into MPEG2?
I use a GF4-TI-4400 VIVO card.
My machine is an Athlon XP 2200, 512Mb Ram memory.

I once used PowerVCR II for captures using Mpeg2 and didn't like the results. (very blocky...) ,Now, I'm using VirtualDub 1.4.13 and Huffyuv, and after capture, I then convert to Xvid. The quality is good, but the process is a bit slow, have to deinterlace, I capture on 640X480...
I'd like to try virtualDub and Mpeg2 codec. I recently installed CCE, but I noticed it does not appeared in my choices of encoding codecs in virtualdub. Should it ?

VirtualDub uses VfW (= Video for Windows) codecs. As far as I know there is no MPEG-2 VfW codec available. And I doubt it would be possible to let a VfW codec create MPEG-2 file structures, as these codecs are designed for AVI (although this is not a must: e.g. there's a VirtualVCR derivate which allows for capturing in Matroska file format).

Maybe it's possible to put an MPEG-2 elementary video stream into the vids stream of an AVI, and an MP2 audio stream into the auds stream. To create a DVD from such a file you'd have to demux the elementary streams, and then author.

You might like to try WinDVR instead, it gives much better quality and is more configurable.

Doesn't ffvfw have an mpeg2 option?
