I have to admit I'm poor at this.. I read a few of the guides but I can't figure out the best way to do this. I have a DVD RIP of a movie which is encoded in XviD. I wish to burn this into a DVD-R so that I can watch on my DVD player. Can anyone recommend the best way to do this? I managed to make it into a MPEG2 file but the quality isn't really that good. In fact it seems to be worse off than the original AVI which I have.

Codec: XviD
BitRate: 1540 kb/s
FPS: 23.976
Stream Type: OpenDML AVI
x:y : 800x320 (2.50:1) [=5:2]

I'm really unsure even after reading most of the conversion guides.. So please help recommend the way to get the best out of the AVI..

Well the quality should be lower...short of using filters to clean up bad material...encoding to any format - even a superior codec, results in quality loss. You can't magically regain the quality of the original source.

My advice is this: read Q62 of the Q&A in the DVD2SVCD basic forum. That will tell you how to write an avisynth script that will result in the correct aspect ratio.

Other than that, and keeping the bitrate high, the problem you are going to have with the video is unavoidable. You can't polish a turd :)
