View Full Version : Strange subtitle demuxed by DIF4U

I'm backing up Bridget Jones's Diary. The movie has one subtitle. When done and in test run, I recognized the subtitle has gone beserk. Looking closely, I noticed that DIF4U has produced lots more subtitle bitmaps than shown in the original movie. The number of subtitle lines in the original movie is about 1500-1600, yet I got 2029 bitmaps from DIF4U. It seems we can get something from nothing! Because of this, the backup movie shows a lot more subtitle lines that have nothing to do with what the actors are speaking.
I wonder what happened. Has anyone experienced something like this before? I don't think DIF4U generates more data than what's in the movie. So the extra data must already exist in the original DVD. Then why don't we see it when showing the original movie? Is that another trick (like the menu in Lion King 2) to discourage DVD backup? If that's the case, then how did they do it? Any ideas?

when you look at the substream in IFOEdit, do you see something like "0x20,0x21"?

On the source DVD, I see one subtitle stream at 0x20.
I don't have the reauthored DVD image to check that detail. I've just rebuilt my hard disk and have to copy all the encoded files of the movie (.MPV, .SCP, .SCN, etc) back on the disk for rebuilding the DVD. Strangely, Scenerist refuses to import those files although they worked fine a few days ago.
I don't know why, and can't rebuild the movie now. Could you tell me what you suspect being the cause of the problem here? Thanks, Eyes. You're great.:)

The file paths are hard-coded into the .scp, .scn, .sst(s), .d2vs, etc.. So unless you have the project in the exact same path that is was before you copied it, it won't work.
From what I can tell from Amazon, that DVD has a director's commentary track, maybe it has subs to go along with it? I can't think of a way to use one stream (0x20) as two subtracks.

I set my file path exactly as before, so Scenerist can find the files alright. The problem is, it rejects the files. For the .mpv file, it says the file's format is wrong!? That's weird, because that .mpv was exactly the file I used to build the DVD previously.
(As a sideline, could you point me to some information about the difference between .m2v, .mpv, .mpv.m2v? Since I began learning this, I searched for this information but couldn't find it. All these formats are MPEG, we can play them with Media Player, yet Scenerist refuses .m2v, and sometimes it rejects .mpv too. )
Back to the subtitle issue. I don't see how the director's comments can affect the subtitle. In fact, on test run of the reauthored DVD last week, the junk subtitle appears right at the beginning of the DVD, when the studio's logo shows up!

Oops! Sorry about this thread. I think the problem I've seen here is due to something wrong with my machine, not with the source DVD.
Last week, when I ripped the subtitle, no matter with vobsub or subrip, the results were erratic. After rebuilding my hard disk, now subrip gives me good output.
Just an update. Thanks, Eyes.
