Inferior sound quality after burning

Hi,

I'm transferring vintage music footage from VHS to SVCD and am experiencing a problem I can't find a solution for.

My VirtualDub capture settings:

Audio - PCM, 44100 kHz, 16 bit, stereo 224 kbits/sec
Video - 480*480, 29,97 fps, uncompressed

So far no problems at all (no dropped frames etc.)

In TMPGEnc audio is encoded at 224 kbits/sec.

The generated mpeg-2 file has good sound - after burning it to CD-R, it sounds as if a flanger effect was applied. I have absolutely no idea how this comes. I'm using Nero 5.5.10.9. (Win XP).

Having searched google and this board to find a solution for my problem without success, I decided to create this thread.

Please accept my apologies if this has been discussed before.

Did you try a different encoder for audio? You can configure tmpgenc to use toolame for its encoding.

I have no idea why the burnt cd-r should sound different from the same file on hdd.

Thanks for your response, smiller. Since the sound was ok after encoding, I haven't tried to use the lame encoder. Thanks for this suggestion, will try this.

Btw, my burner is a Lite-On LTR-42246S; I've burnt discs at 4x up to 52x speed to no avail.

Encoded the avi files again. This time I used toolame for the sound encoding - same problem.

I am puzzled.

Meanwhile I extracted the mpeg files from SVCD using VCDGear, played the mpegs and to my surprise the sound is ok. I'll have to try those discs out on another machine.
