Nero's website lists recode 2 as a free gift for nero 6 ultra users, but there is no link to download it. Has anyone heard when this will be released?

or is it not released to the public yetMake a reasonable guess.. if it were in the public domain I suppose you would find it at ahead.com. Since it isn't, it is not for public consumption and beta testers have been instructed to not share the beta with anyone.

Obviously with the guide being posted, the release date is not far behind.
Kinda strange the way everyone gets "hyped-up" when a new application is about. Guess it's anticipation.

if you read the guide now, you know what to expect. Some things aren't quite as shiny imho. I thought rather than follow the "hype in a review" trail I'll go with a guide directly, so you can see exactly what you're going to get. Obviously, the DVD output mode is also still there (and has been enhanced) and that functionality will also be covered in a few days.

What are exactly the steps to apply and become a Nero Digital betatester and have access to preview versions and betas of Ahead software? Is there a form or something to fill on Nero.com or do they pick their betatesters among popular web site editors like Doom9? :D

I think they specifically picked websites that are active in the area Recode2 targets, so DVD backups, MPEG-4 and DVD video. And as far as I know, the product is very close to a release.. you should have it by Christmas.

I actually decided to send a fax to Nero asking if they would tell me the release date for the "Power Pack" but I never recieved a reply. Go figure.:) They should at least take the "available in December 2003" off their site, it's killing me.

December will last for another 21 days ;) And they don't really owe it to you, do they? Recode2 is a free upgrade for registered users. I doubt anybody shells out the money to buy Nero just because he or she is interested in Recode2.. there are cheaper alternatives (dvd shrink does almost the same thing in the transcoding are, and there are other good and free video codecs as well.. without the current limitation ND output has).

you can read my guides on both mp4 and dvd-r output so you know what to expect. For the dvd-r output, there are a few new and nice features but I doubt the engine has been changed a lot. It's just a bit more streamlined, and features known from dvd2one and dvdshrink (adding multiple discs to one) have been added. It is interesting to see that the people who do have the solution are not the ones hyping it.. it's the people who cannot get enough of new stuff and let their enthusiasm get way overboard. There's nothing magical about Recode2.
Replacing titles by a still is already available in Recode1. Merging flippers and putting multiple movies onto a DVD is already available in dvd2one and dvd shrink.
Language preselection is already available in pretty much every tool but dvd shrink (I keep bugging him to add that).
burning the output directly is already available in clonedvd and IC7/8.
For the DVD backup part, it's more like a natural evolution, as was IC8 after IC7. It is a good product nevertheless, and Nero6 owners do get it for free and why complain about free stuff. But it isn't the solution to al problems and the big 3 method still looks better (and always will).

Free is goooood.....
Richk50, your probably right about being dissapointed but half the fun is trying different methods to see what you get, trial and error stuff. I just think it's a pretty cool freebie, since as Doom9 said it adds known features from two other programs.

oh well, I guess it's time I spoke my mind as I can't believe all this denial regarding Shrink's input whichever way into Recode
some people still don't see the obvious and it's funny reading some posts from people who cannot see it
now would Shrink be wise to add most of the missing features into DVDShrink that Recode has and effectively killing the sales of Recode?
seeing as he will be getting rewarded for his input into Reocode then doing this would be shooting himself in the foot and I ask anyone to say they would add the missing features. No doubt someone will :p, but they may be extremely rich, unbelievably generous, completely stupid or some other unknown reason
so why all the denial of the 'rumours' when it's so obvious and has been for a while? Is this to stop a revolt as DVDShrink may never get certain features added? I'm sure anyone who dared bad mouth Shrink in any way for this would soon be put in their place by others ;). I'm sure people would rather know than be kept in the dark but that's just my opinion and I respect what others do but I still believe in freedom of speech, so apologies to anyone who may feel offended by this post
I sold out for DVDStripper and got slated for it :(, but I'm sure plenty others would have done the same thing and I fully respect the guys who do it all for free and offered to share my rewards with the two great authors LIGHTNING UK and Derrow even before it's release. Other authors ask for donations which is fair enough but some seem to take it a step too far and basically beg as it's everywhere, on the site, in their posts and all over the program. This makes you feel obliged to donate due to guilt for the time/effort they have contributed even though it's 'freeware' :( (maybe 'guiltware'?). Look at Shrink he didn't even accept donations and look at what he has contributed. He wouldn't have to ask anyway as I'm sure many would donate but I would love to know what percentage actually would?
all I say is Good Luck Shrink for your contribution into the backup world and do whatever you want to do as I don't expect anything else at all from you even though I'm sure you will update DVDShrink :D
now let's start singing 'for he's a jolly good fellow' and 3 cheers for Shrink ;)

I don't see why you need to justify anybody. Let's just all be honest and say that majority of people use ilegal copies of software. I mean it is so obvious that nobody will buy Scenarist for the price it's stated (I would have to sell my kidney to do that). The same thing applies to Recode2- most of the people will use it freely without paying anything. The only thing that would justify using DVDshrink is the matter of principle (no commercial software on my PC attitude).
Let us also be honest and say that dvdshrink is happy because he is getting payed, a lot of people is happy because they will use Recode2 by legal or ilegal means and Ahead is happy because most of their sale goes via OEM channels anyway.
So let us leave dvdshrink alone and in peace and let's enjoy Recode2 in any way possible.;) ;) ;)

@DVDShrink,
your welcome and it's nice to see you around ;). I look forward to future releases and I just wish we could have had a chat sometime :(, is it still possible?
@lighty,
I'm not justifying anything and certainly not whether you should pay the money for Recode. I'm just saying people should be allowed to do what they want with what they have created with their own time and effort and other people should respect that no matter if it's free, chargable or overpriced
I know there is warez in the world and you can basically get a copy of anything if you look hard enough and you bring up the classic example of Scenarist. The guys who wrote that must be multi millionaires if everyone who has spoke about it owns a legitimate copy :D.I often wonder how popular these 'popular' programs would be if these people actually had to buy them instead of getting them illegally!
I don't think this thread is pestering DVDShrink but more praising his efforts and it's about time he got rewarded for them :)
p.s. I still think you should setup a donation DVDShrink as some will want to show their appreciation but don't wish to purchase Recode to do it

Hey, that's what I'm trying to say also- dvdshrink has the right to do anything he wants. I merely stated that a lot of people are pissed at him becaue he works for Ahead now and it seems to me that they're don't know what they're talking about. dvdshrink has to eat and pay his bills just as anybody else. And if one so badly needs Recode2 then one could buy Nero and get it for free or it could simply be found on warez sites.
I like open-sourced software because projects are alive for a long time even after original author lose interest in developing it further. But one has to be honest and admit that a lot of superb free software is out there also- DVDshrink, EAC, Foobar2000... So if their authors won't develop them anymore it's their moral right not to do so and if they make a living out of reusing their code then it is justified also.
I think a lot of people are kind of obsessed with opensourced stuff because of paranoia and fears that we learned by using M$ software. It is often buggy, it often has spyware installed and the prices are skyhigh for ordinary people and more so in a less developed countries. So I would of course like to see new DVDshrink just for the convinience of not having to install it or to download gargantuous Ahead packages but hey- I am happy this way also!
P.S.
As for donations- I would like to help several small projects but usualy that means using Paypal and it does not accept any kind of transactions from and to Eastern Europe.

"I merely stated that a lot of people are pissed at him becaue he works for Ahead now" - on this forum ? where ?
if people are critisising on another forum then surely thats where you should be saying all that and putting them straight ?
"I think a lot of people are kind of obsessed with opensourced stuff" - no they are protective of the rights of open source programs because they get ripped off and used by commercial companies so often. just look at all the dvd to avi/vcd/svcd programs now. want to guess the percentage that are DVDx with a changed gui ? or how about bundled feeware with a guide(which is what you technically pay for) ? so we should just say who cares ? ye thats a good way to encourage people to keep developing their programs.(yes thats sarcasm for those that missed it :) )

Recode 2 looks assome. The interface is great and I justdid run a quick test on NARC.
Quality is better then Recode 0.97 especialy with the deep analyse function enabled. Takes about 45 minutes to encode analyse. Takes 17 minutes for a movie only backup. The reauthoring function works great. Also what I noticed is the fact that when I remove the primary audio the IFO are updated so the next available one is played (at least for this movie).
It has almost everything that was discussed in the different threads that was missing in DVD Shrink.
Only thing missing is the complete removal of a title or menu (use full for warnings). It for now can only be replaced with a bitmap or color or slideshow,

Jup it is there again, but what I noticed is that the date has changed. Compared the two files and found that the Nero Recode exe has been updated this morning. The version number did not change however. If you look at the special build properties it has become 2.0.0.7b.

Well, you can use Nero to burn it or have Recode 6 write it to a file and use a burner of your choice, I guess.

So I've used Recode 2 to remake a DVD. I took just the main movie and 5.1 audio track. Looks pretty good. What I'm trying to figure out is if the NeroDigital codec performs the mpeg2 encoding as well (meaning that is uses a newer and better method than dvdshrink, thus producing greater quality encodes)??? I could try to use my own eye to figure that out, but I'd rather hear it from someone who actually knows.
As well, I'm trying to figure out how the title sizing mechanism works in Recode 2. I tried to do a full dvd-to-dvd backup, and I wanted to allocate as small a size as possible to the main menu, extras, etc. I moved the slider as far left as possible, and those titles would only go around 50%. The slider wouldn't go any further to the left. I want go smaller...for instance, with NuMenu4U, you set the bitrate to 1850, and it produces a menu about 1/3 the original size. Can anyone explain Recode's behaviour regarding this?

Recode and similar programs, AKA "Transcoders" have a limit on how much compression they can achieve. Typically around %50 is the norm.
CCE is an encoder and can compress to very low bitrates and achieve smaller sizes, at the cost of higher complexity and potential incompatibilities.

Not quit true I think. I did a disk today that was 8GB big. Nero Recode 2 could only transcode it back to 4666GB so I did. Then I took this recoded disk and compressed it again and then it could go further. The result is stil very impressive so I do not understand why I could not compress it more in the first place but it works this way and normaly it is not needed to compress so much.
Quality of a CCE encode would have been a little better. Less sharp but with no macro blocking at all. But then it would have taken me at least a day to get it compressed and reauthered and some more time to test if everything works.

14th December 2003, 02:46
Looking very good so far. Using the default compressions, custom 4482, advanced analysis, and high priority I am consistently getting a 4.37gb product analysed, transcoded and burned in an hour with transcoder quality comparable to or better than the leading transcoders IMHO. When time permits I'll cut its teeth on some "problem" DVD's to see its true grit.

I say it's better than Shrink...then again it is...Shrink. I may be wrong but the Advanced analysis engine appears to be more refined and the sizing of the transcode is more accurate than Shrink 3 Beta 5. The transcode quality also appears to be more consistent (bitrate analysis) and cleaner in comparison so far.

You need to run NEROVISION EXPRESS

then everything works............
Unless you actually run nerovision express, recode

Well, I've tried it all. Uninstall/reinstall Nerovision; removing everything and cleaning registry manually; installed Nerovision first, Nero second; and vice-versa... but Recode 2 keeps on claiming that I need to install the MPEG2 plug-in. Anyone know the actual filename of the plug-in?

You need to have serial that works for complete Nero suite and you have to use it to unlock Nero as well as Nero VisionExpress.

lighty, thanks for the advice. However, I just found out that Recode 2 works as long as I don't put in a serial number or install Nero 6.
I simply installed the latest NeroVision 2 (with Recode 2). If I run NeroVision Express and put in a serial number, or install Nero 6 and put in a serial number, Recode 2 stops working and starts complaining about the plug-in. Hah.

That just means that you're not using correct serial number. Search "black" forums and you will find correct number.

Thanks for suggestions on how to get Recode 2 running, it now works fine (the method with a fresh install and running NeroVision Express worked).
I've done a few movies, and here are my experiences so far:
PROS:
- It removes the layer break
- It removes references to deleted audio tracks (and sets default to the next one in the list)
- It is rather fast - like 40-70% faster than DVDShrink on my P4 3.0 HT. Supposedly Nero 6.3.0.0 has HT support, dunno if that goes for Recode too, but it sure is fast.
- Audio preview (though only DD2.0 without extra plugins)
- Burn straight after transcoding.
- You can replace disabled sequences with just a single colour, making it take even less space.
CONS:
The interface, while being easy to use and all that, is still not quite as intuitive as DVDShrink. But that's just my personal opinion.
It's not free. Well it is, if you have Nero Burning ROM Ultra, but not everyone has that.
Conclusion (so far):
A rather good attempt from Ahead and definately an improvement over the old Recode. I shall be looking forward to update ;-)

DVD Shrink 3.1 (coming to a cinema near you soon) comparison:
- Removal of layer-break.
- Audio preview (all formats / DTS via S/PDIF output).
- HT / Dual-processor support.
- Still no burning engine.
- Still no way of totally removing titles in "Full-disk" mode.
- Disabled audio/subpicture streams are correctly remapped and removed from IFO files (if they are disabled in every title which contain a reference to those streams).
- Slower but more accurate "Quick analysis".
- Low-priority mode.
Not bad, don't you think? ;)
tf
16th December 2003, 23:29
Coincidence that just about all those are in Recode 2, right down to the somewhat slower "quick analysis" at the beginning? ;-)
Either way, it's good to hear that things are shaping up for DVDShrink.
What about the same option as Recode? The one where you replace a title with a single colour.
Other than that, it's kinda hard for me to come up with new and realistic ideas. Of course integration of DVDStripper's features would be nice (as would something like CCE/ReJig/ProCoder for encoding), but those are not realistic options.
Perhaps some sort of menu editing would be cool, but for now, I'll settle for just a new version :-)

DVD Shrink 3.1? Groovy! ;)
The only thing still missing now IMHO is the possibility to set certain audio or subtitle-streams to 'active' (like it's possible with DVD2one by doubleclicking a stream) when doing movie-only (= no menu, which usually gives that nessecary active-command).
This feature comes in *very* handy with forced subs in an extra stream (which have to be active by default).
Anyway, looking forward to the new version...

I am attempting to backup my Monster's Inc. dvd with Recode. I have "deleted" the fullscreen version using Recode so it can fit on one disc. Do I still have to use menuedit to edit the aspect ratio menu so that when I click on "fullscreen" it'll play the "widescreen" version OR does Recode do this automatically? Thanks.
