In the custom settings box with dvd2dvd. I just noticed that it is checked after doing a fresh install of dvd2dvd and the settings for cce in advanced have the progressive checked. What difference if it is checked or unchecked would I notice. All my backups are movie only backups with highest priority to picture quality.

Progressive is for progressive, non-interlaced material. Typical NTSC sources should all be progressive and encoded with pulldown.

So basically almost all dvd's are progressive? Is there any dvd's that are not?

Almost all film source DVDs are progressive and telecined, for NTSC. Please read this comprehensive document on the subject: http://www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm

No, i"m in PAL-land and i"ve found lots of interlaced movies. Better to check it with BitRate viewer, use the search button.

I've backed up over 200 PAL movies, 2 of which were progressive

PAL movies are frequently marked as interlaced, but that does mean jack - they are still almost always progressive and I always mark them as such in CCE (although AFAIK it doesn't matter...provided you select zigzag).

Check for combing in DVD2AVI - you'll rarely find it.

Why would they be flagged as interlaced?

And what does zigzag mean?
I only check that box it bitrate viewer tells me the source is zigzag (which isn't often)
This would indicate to me that it really doesn't matter if you tick interlaced or progressive in CCE, which brings us to the question of why the tick boxes are there if they don't do anything

1. If content is interlaced it will exhibit combing artifacts in DVD2AVI. If it isn't interlaced, it won't.

2. Most theatrical releases are shot on film and then sped up from 24 fps to 25 fps. Hence they must be progressive, although they may end up interlaced if converted from NTSC or padded out rather than being subjected to the traditional PAL speedup but this is uncommon.

3. Zigzag affects how the content encoded (how exactly I have no idea), and is better for progressive material, at least according to the CCE manual, and you are encoding with CCE.

4. NTSC material if interlaced has a framerate of 29.97 fps - as opposed 23.976 for progressive material pre-pulldown, so the interlaced flag is relevant there AFAIK (although obviously I don't deal in NTSC material). But with PAL the framerate is 25 fps regardless.

So the end result is this...if a DVD does not exhibit combing then it is progressive and should be encoded with zigzag...and marked as progressive (to be technically correct).

Finally, why would they be flagged as interlaced? Maybe it's just the nature of the hardware commonly used, who knows...but it doesn't mean jack unless you see combing.

Thanks for that.
I now know slightly more than I did yesterday, which can't be a bad thing.

I have something peculiar happening to one of my movies. About halfway through, according to bitrate viewer, the progressive turns to interlaced. I can definitely see it on my movie that I reencode. It looks sort of jittery. When I first encoded, I had interlaced checked. The second time, I checked progressive. Same problem at the same point in the movie. The movie is Bad Boys 2, NTSC, encoding on cce 2.50. I really haven't paid much attention to all the checkmarks and really found out what they do in cce, but it's nice to know that most ntsc movies, if not all, are progressive. Anyone got any ideas as to what is causing this.

Did you check this? (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=409242&highlight=progressive#post409242)

AFAIK, BR Viewer knows about movie properties as much as I know about Senegal's folklore.

VOB 3 of Bad Boys II is interlaced, all the rest are progressive.
