Hi,

I'll be buying a DVD burner soon, and I've narrowed my choice down to either the Pioneer DVR-A06 or the Plextor PX-504A. The prices of both are almost identical.

Has anyone had any problems with either of these drives? Or maybe someone can provide some info to help me choose one over the other.

I've read that the Pioneer A06 and 106 are the same, only the A06 is Retail and 106 is OEM and is not branded on the front of the drive. Can someone confirm this, please?

Thanks for your time,
John.

DVR 106D here no complaints yet, even used really cheapo K hypermedia +RW's and have played on 6 different standalones, erased and re-burned as well.

I own the plextor PX-504A. I'm happy with it. I haven't had a coaster yet, but I've only used branded media.

To be honest, I think you'd be happy with either drive.

Both great drives. FYI: dell has the new 708A plextor on sale right now w/ a $30 rebate. Go to their home section (no Tax there) and look under software and periphrals. Total is $280 w/ free delivery - rebate = $178 shipped. Great deal or go to new egg and get a pioneer oem for around $130 shipped. I decided to go w/ pioneer just because of the great reviews.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm in Ireland, and newegg doesn't ship abroad.

I plan on buying off Komplett, but can someone explain why the A06 (Retail) is €175 and the 106 (Bulk/OEM) is €210? I thought it would have been the other way around: http://www.komplett.ie/k/kl.asp?AvdID=1&CatID=3&GrpID=10&t=1897&l=2

Try looking on www.121cdr.co.uk instead.

The pioneer is really cheap on there.

You might also like to look at the new Lite-On model. Its 8x and not really all that much more expensive.

And the Datasafe Ritek G04 DVD-R's.
Bulletproof.
Burned 50 @ 4x with no coasters and flawless playback on 10 different players

Buy your burner and plenty of discs in one order if you're buying from there though, because they charge a swingeing £20 for delivery to RoI!

If you need any convincing, the first DataSafe disc I burned was on 6th Oct. It was DV footage of a stag party in Dublin. It got passed round all the guys who went and was returned to me yesterday, covered in light surface scratches, fingermarks and with evidence of an unidentified liquid spillage!

I cleaned it up with a cotton hanky and did the Nero speed test to see how it fared.

for 90p a disc it may be steep but tell me that isn't worth paying for.

I have and use the A06, I think Pioneer is a wiser choise because of all the web support available.

I've had a Pioneer 106D running in one of my boxes for about four months now and have been delighted with it. No problems with DVD+-R and DVD+RW; can't comment on DVD-RW as I never use it.

Nero recognises it, as does the built-in ASPI burner in DVD Lab.

It gets a thumbs up from me.

I've tested it with Nero 6, Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator, VCD Easy, DVD-Lab, TMPGENC DVD Author.

Plextor 504A here.....
i've got it for 4 months and burned 235+ DVD+R, not ONE coaster.(Nero 6,Alcohol 120%,CopyToDVD).
Using TAIYO YUDEN THAT's DVD+R 4x.
And ofcourse Plextor is the King of quality and support.
Only one firmware update for this recorder... for a 10 months ago released Plextor drive means it is flawless;)
(Plextor PX-708A has 3 new firmwares updates and its a newer one)

I'd say stepping it up a notch and going with the plextor-708A, I did lots of research before purchasing mine and it has been rated the best dvd-burner thus far for what it's capable of. I have been more than impressed with the burns with branded/unbranded media and you can't tell a difference...
