(S)VCD and Anamorphic Widescreen??

Hi.
I've been 'backing up' my DVDs with DVDRW (one cheap pack that I use over and over and OVER again!..GRIN)

BUT....I'd like to try VCD and wondered, since I have a widescreen TV, can I burn VCD or SVCD in anamorphic widescreen?

FORGOT to say that I'm using TMPGNC, so NOT asking 'how' to do it....
The wizards combined with the guides here make it PLAIN SAILING!!!

Just want to know (BEFORE investing in some blank CDs) whether I CAN do it??

Of course you can. ;)

The point is if your player will recognize the AR flag on the MPEG stream when it is a VCD or SVCD. Mine doesn't and I've read most players don't either.

I suggest you to try on a CD-WR first and get out of doubt.

Also, :search: next time and save yourself and lots of people here a lot of time. ;)

Beware about r6d2 advice. Usually AR flag does not be recognized and the desktop doesn't play anything (Mine outputs a jerky green full screen)
But you still have another choice (non-standard, of course). Use a 4:3 AR flag but with a 16:9 "real" encoded aspect ratio. The settop will work and you can manually select 16:9 on your TV. The problem with this "trick", as you can imagine, is if you try to watch the CD on a 4:3 TV, there is no way to recover the correct AR.

Many thanks for ALL advice and DER to myself for not thinking I can of COURSE just manually set the TV to 16:9 and make the VCD 4:3!!

I DID search the forum....but the Qs on 16:9 didn't really answer MY Q!!

BUT...If I've been a bit blind....sorry. Still, I appreciate ppl taking the time to answer my 'tiring' post ;)

As far as ratio on other TVs, I don't 'profit' from my backups, just watch at home... Course, friends ARE allowed round!!!!

Actually, I wasn't really aware of the problem that DVD/SVCD Players didn't recognize the 16:9 AR flag and happily coded along using anamorphic 16:9 in SVCDs (with 16:9 AR flag).

Since I also only make SVCDs for my family (kids mainly - you know how they handle DVDs...) I am very happy to say that my Hiteker HE-940 DVD DivX Player handles these very vell - both on a 4:4 and 16:9 TV!

Seems that sometimes one accidentally buys the right stuff :-)

Having only ever bought the one pack of DVDRW discs, I haven't even got around to trying VCD yet!! Maybe I'm just a coward.....

My DVD player is a PLU2 (?) Hi-Scan 128X, progressive scan....or something like that ..looked good on EBay!!...NO sniggering at the back please...it works FINE...ok??!!:D

In fact, it does some REALLY clever things, (sadly playing back DIVX is NOT one of them).

I guess I'll just stick with the DVDRW for now unless we find that we need to buy more discs.....cheapskates that we are.....(ok...SKINT and have lotsa kids AND its Christmas!!)
