I tried to do a backup but was unpleasently surprised when I ran out of disk space during the scenarist step (did not think over 20 Gb would be needed...). Is there some simple way of redoing the scenarist step now that I have fixed some more diskspace (thus sparing me from the cce step)?

I may be missing something here but can't you free up some drive space and use the crash recovery feature?
Other than that, it depends at what point it failed. The scenarist step produces both a DVD folder and a DVD image @ 4.5GB each. If the image failed but the vob files in the DVD image folder are complete (check by playing in Win/Power DVD) then you can use Nero or the burning engine in TMPGEnc DVD Author (30 day free trial - do a google) to burn direct to disc from the folder.
Alternatively, if all else fails, you can keep your converted video and audio files (if NTSC use the pulldown encoded one, if using source audio there may be no encoded audio file in which case use extracted audio.ac3). Delete everything but these files to free disc space then use TMPGEnc DVD Author to manually author and burn the disc.
I need to update this site desperately but the last bit of the AVI2DVDR bit goes over how to do this.
